Montenegro Summons Russian Ambassador Over Controversial Statements

Montenegro’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs formally summoned the Russian Ambassador, Aleksander Lukašik, on November 17, 2025, following a series of controversial statements he made concerning Montenegro’s internal affairs. These remarks, deemed inappropriate by the Ministry, were seen as a blatant interference in the country’s domestic matters.

The summons was specifically triggered by comments made by Ambassador Lukašik after the Montenegrin Parliament approved the decision to join NATO’s mechanism for providing security assistance and training for Ukraine (NSATU). His subsequent negative assessment of an interview conducted with Montenegrin President Jakov Milatović by the French newspaper La Croix further escalated tensions.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that such actions and criticisms are entirely unacceptable. They reiterated that Montenegro would not allow any external party to undermine the dignity of its institutions. The Ministry conveyed a clear message to the Russian Ambassador, stating that future similar communications would be treated as deliberate hostile actions. In response, the Ministry pledged to react appropriately in line with international norms.

Montenegro expects full respect for its institutions and officials from the Russian Embassy. The Ministry clarified that Montenegro pursues its foreign policy independently, guided by its own national and strategic interests. These interests, defined by foreign policy priorities, include NATO membership and dedication to the European Union accession process.

The diplomatic exchange underlines ongoing tensions between Montenegro and Russia, particularly in light of Montenegro’s alignment with Western policies. The Ministry’s strong stance reflects the country’s commitment to maintaining its sovereignty and pursuing strategic partnerships that align with its national interests.
