Manchester United Eyes Four Contenders to Replace Amorim
Manchester United has initiated the search for a new manager following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim earlier this week. The decision comes after Amorim stated he was at Old Trafford to be the “manager, not the head coach,” leading to his position becoming untenable. With the team’s performance having faltered in the Premier League, owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe deemed it necessary to make a change.
In the interim, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expected to take over as caretaker manager. A meeting regarding this appointment took place in the past few days, setting the stage for a potential return for Solskjaer, who previously held the role with notable success.
Key Contenders for the Permanent Role
As Manchester United ponders its options for a permanent replacement, several names have emerged as leading candidates to take the reins in the summer.
Thomas Tuchel, currently the manager of the England national team, is a strong contender. His contract with the Football Association, signed in October 2024, is set to expire after the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. If United seeks a caretaker manager until the season’s end, Tuchel could be an appealing and cost-effective choice, according to The Hard Tackle.
Oliver Glasner, who is currently managing at Selhurst Park, is another option. His contract extends until the end of the 2025/26 season, and he has publicly expressed dissatisfaction with the transfer policies at Crystal Palace. Reports indicate that United officials are closely monitoring Glasner’s situation, with some sources identifying him as a frontrunner for the role.
Emerging Candidates and Internal Options
Another name gaining traction is Julian Nagelsmann. The director of recruitment at United, Christopher Vivell, is reportedly advocating for Nagelsmann’s appointment after the World Cup. Like Tuchel, Nagelsmann has a significant commitment guiding the German national team, but his future remains uncertain. Vivell’s support could play a crucial role in his candidacy.
Lastly, there is a possibility that the caretaker manager could be offered the position permanently. Both Solskjaer and Michael Carrick have emerged as potential candidates for the interim role, with discussions taking place this week. Solskjaer previously enjoyed a successful tenure after stepping in as caretaker following Jose Mourinho‘s departure in 2018, making him a familiar choice among players.
As Manchester United approaches a decision on the future of its managerial position, the club remains focused on finding the right individual to lead the team back to its winning ways. The coming weeks will be critical in shaping the direction of this storied club.
