Liverpool Pursues Rising Star Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes
Liverpool FC is reportedly keen on signing Jeremy Jacquet, a promising 20-year-old defender from Rennes. The interest from the Premier League club comes as several top teams, including Chelsea and Arsenal, also monitor the young talent’s progress. Jacquet, who has made 15 league appearances for Rennes this season, is gaining recognition as one of the best young defenders in France.
According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, Jacquet has been identified by Liverpool as a potential target, described as an “insane centre-back in the making.” With his impressive performances in Ligue 1, the club may face competition not just from English teams but also from giants like Real Madrid and Manchester City.
Jacquet’s Development and Current Form
A product of the Rennes academy, Jacquet spent the first half of last season on loan at Clermont Foot, where he made 17 appearances and scored two goals. This season, he has stepped up, starting 16 of Rennes’ 17 league matches. His contributions have been key in helping Rennes secure six victories in their last seven games, bolstering their position in the league.
Jacquet’s talent has drawn comparisons to fellow French defender William Saliba, further highlighting his potential. With Rennes extending his contract last summer until the end of the 2028/29 season, the club is well-positioned to negotiate any transfer should interest materialize.
Competition for Defensive Reinforcements
Liverpool’s pursuit of Jacquet aligns with their plans to strengthen their defensive lineup ahead of the 2026 season. The club has long admired Marc Guehi, the captain of Crystal Palace, who was close to joining Liverpool last summer. As Guehi’s contract nears expiration in June, Liverpool might renew their interest, although competition is expected from Manchester City.
Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner anticipates that Guehi will remain with the club until the end of the current season before considering his next move. Given Guehi’s exceptional form over the past couple of years, multiple clubs are likely to vie for his signature.
As Liverpool navigates the competitive landscape for promising defenders, the club’s focus on Jacquet underscores their strategy of investing in young talent with high potential. Whether they can secure the Rennes star in the face of stiff competition remains to be seen, but the interest reflects Liverpool’s commitment to maintaining a strong defensive unit for the future.
