The second edition of the Mirko Kovač Days commenced in Podgorica on December 7, 2023, featuring a series of literary panels that explore the legacy of the acclaimed Montenegrin author. Organized by the publishing house Fokalizator, the event will continue until December 9 and includes programs in both Niksic and Cetinje.

The festival officially opened with the promotion of a new edition of the renowned book “Prolegomena: Vježbanka Danilo Kiš” by Božo Koprivica. Following this, a video presentation from Radmila Vojvodić, who hails from Kovač’s hometown, was showcased as part of the “Željeznička postaja Petrovići” program. The discussions then shifted to the theme of “Psychological Pausing: Dramas, Scenarios,” featuring insights from Janko Ljumović, Aleksandar Radunović, and Ana Vukotić, moderated by Dragana Erjavšek.

Exploring Kovač’s Dramatic Works

During the discussions, Ljumović emphasized the significance of Kovač’s plays and screenplays within his broader literary oeuvre. He noted that many of these texts have been included in selected works and anthologies. The conversation also highlighted Kovač’s collaborations with notable figures in theatre, film, and television.

Radunović pointed out Kovač’s unique approach to Montenegrin history and reality. He referenced Kovač’s treatment of characters in the plays “Lažni car” and “Danilo.” He explained, “When writing about historical figures, which serve as monuments or icons, there is a tendency to portray them nobly. Yet, in the drama, Prince Danilo displays intense jealousy, questioning his character’s integrity.” Radunović asserted that great writers challenge the contexts in which they create, pushing boundaries in their narratives.

The Need for More Staging of Kovač’s Works

Vukotić expressed concern over the limited number of theatrical events based on Kovač’s plays in Montenegro, suggesting this contributes to a lack of recognition for him as a dominant playwright. “It is unfortunate, as he possesses a serious and distinctive body of work,” she remarked, highlighting the sharp language, exploration of identity, and exceptional character development found in his dramas.

The first day of the festival concluded with the program “Rastreseni život: Friends on Mirko,” featuring discussions with Vlaho Bogišić and Božo Koprivica, moderated by Vanja Kovačević. Through these events, the festival aims to not only celebrate Kovač’s contributions to literature but also to inspire new conversations about his enduring impact on the cultural landscape of Montenegro and beyond.

As the festival unfolds, attendees and participants alike reflect on Kovač’s profound influence and the relevance of his work in today’s literary and theatrical dialogues.
