LaLiga Plans New Attempt for U.S. Regular-Season Match

The Spanish soccer league, LaLiga, has announced intentions to revive plans for hosting a regular-season match in the United States. During a press conference in London on March 14, 2024, LaLiga president Javier Tebas confirmed that efforts are ongoing to bring a top-tier Spanish match to American soil, despite previous setbacks.

These ambitions follow the controversial cancellation of a game between Barcelona and Villarreal, originally scheduled for December 20, 2023, at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. The match would have marked a historic moment as Spain’s first major European league to play a regular-season game abroad. However, opposition from clubs, players, and fans led to the plans being scrapped last year.

LaLiga’s Vision and Opposition

Tebas expressed determination to revisit the idea, stating, “We are going to try again. I’m not sure when. We have to bring it up at the right time.” He emphasized that staging a single match overseas should not threaten the integrity of the competition, noting, “I don’t think it will cause damage. We are talking about one match out of 380 in a season.”

The league had previously secured approval from soccer governing bodies UEFA and the Spanish soccer federation for the Miami game. However, resistance mounted, leading to a player protest and ultimately prompting the game promoter, Relevent, to announce the postponement due to insufficient time for proper execution.

Previous attempts to host LaLiga games in the U.S. have faced hurdles, including a failed initiative in 2019 when FIFA reinforced its policy requiring official league matches to be played within the member association’s territory. This led to Barcelona withdrawing its commitment to the proposed match.

Comparing Global Sports Strategies

Tebas aims to emulate the success of the NFL and the NBA, both of which have effectively expanded their presence internationally. The NFL has held games in cities such as London and Berlin, while the NBA routinely showcases international matches. He remarked, “We celebrate Halloween, which we never celebrated 20 years ago. We have NFL games. We have NBA games.” This cultural exchange highlights the growing influence of American sports globally.

Highlighting the financial implications, Tebas noted that major European leagues have significantly benefited from international fan engagement, with broadcasting rights generating billions of dollars. He views hosting a match abroad as a means to respect and promote the sport, likening it to the way U.S. sports organizations have successfully attracted international audiences.

Tebas also addressed the ongoing situation regarding Manchester City, which is under investigation for allegedly breaching the Premier League’s financial rules. The club has faced accusations of over 100 breaches since February 2023, yet an independent commission has yet to announce a ruling after hearings scheduled through December 2024. “When you have this type of situation, you’re generating uncertainty and that’s damaging for an institution’s image,” Tebas commented.

As LaLiga looks to the future, the prospect of bringing Spanish soccer to the U.S. remains a significant aspiration.
