Jiri Lehecka Sets Sights on Consistency for 2026 Tennis Season
Jiri Lehecka is ready to kick off his 2026 tennis season at the Brisbane International, an event he clinched last year. The Czech player, who secured his second ATP title by defeating American Reilly Opelka in the final, is determined to build on this success. As he prepares to compete on January 5, 2026, Lehecka emphasizes the importance of consistency as he aims for further achievements this year.
During a pre-tournament press conference, Lehecka was asked about his views on consistency in light of remarks made by Spanish tennis star Carlos Alcaraz. Alcaraz had noted that when fellow player Tomas Machac defeated him, Machac played as if he were among the top five players. The question posed to Lehecka highlighted the challenge of maintaining that level of performance consistently.
Lehecka expressed his agreement with Alcaraz, stating, “We all have the level, and we know that we can produce the tennis that can be on this level. But the consistency is the key.” He elaborated on the challenge players face when they cannot maintain high performance throughout the season. “If we are not able to produce most of the time, then you can play one good match, and then if you are not able to continue at that level, then you’re simply not going to move forward,” he explained.
Reflecting on his previous season, Lehecka acknowledged that he struggled with consistency, particularly during the clay season. “That’s definitely something that I was focusing on during last season, to be more consistent,” he said. He noted a significant improvement when he transitioned to grass courts, indicating that maintaining this level would be a priority for him in 2026.
Lehecka’s Path in Brisbane
As the number-three seed at the Brisbane International, Lehecka will face countryman Tomas Machac in the first round. He spoke highly of Machac, stating, “Tomas is definitely a great player. He proved it last year that he can play amazing tennis.” The two have trained together recently, setting the stage for an exciting match.
Should Lehecka emerge victorious against Machac, he will advance to the second round, where he could meet either Valentin Vacherot or Sebastian Korda. Potential opponents in the later rounds include Learner Tien in the quarterfinals, Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals, and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the final.
With high hopes for the season ahead, Lehecka is eager to demonstrate his improved consistency and compete at the highest level. The Brisbane International promises to be an event to watch as he embarks on his 2026 campaign. Fans can expect thrilling tennis as Lehecka aims to defend his title and establish himself further in the ATP rankings.
