Gwion Ellis Triumphs as DEKA Mile World Champion in Florida
A remarkable achievement unfolded as **Gwion Ellis**, a 21-year-old athlete from **Bala**, was crowned the **DEKA Mile World Champion** at the **DEKA World Championships** held in **Fort Lauderdale, Florida**, from **December 5 to 7, 2023**. Competing against some of the world’s top fitness racers, Ellis showcased his determination and skill in a demanding hybrid fitness environment.
Ellis participated in two key events: DEKA Fit and DEKA Mile. Both events are designed to evaluate athletes’ strength, endurance, and agility through a series of exercise zones. Ellis’s journey began on the first day, where he faced disappointment, finishing fourth in the DEKA Fit. He described this experience as “disappointing,” yet it became a catalyst for his performance the following day.
The DEKA Fit challenges competitors with a **500-meter run** before each exercise zone, while the DEKA Mile features a shorter **160-meter run**, allowing for a different strategic approach. After regrouping from his previous effort, Ellis returned to the arena with renewed focus and determination.
“I changed my tactics for the DEKA Mile thanks to Gethin Ellis Coaching,” he explained. “I backed myself more and felt great with three stations to go. I turned the screw and gave it everything I had, and thankfully I came away with the title.” His training regime leading up to the championships included six to seven weeks of DEKA-specific workouts alongside his boxing training, a combination that paid off in his stunning victory.
Ellis, who works as a mechanic at a garage in **Corwen**, attributed his success to rigorous preparation and a supportive environment. He was accompanied by his brother, **Gethin Ellis**, a fitness trainer, who provided crucial guidance throughout the competition. Reflecting on his victory, he said, “It’s a funny feeling to be labelled a world champion. I struggle with the sense of achievement. I’m always thinking of what’s next or how I can do things better.”
His dedication to fitness is evident not only in this championship win but also in his earlier achievements. Earlier in the year, Ellis completed the **32-mile Sea 2 Summit Offa’s Dyke Ultra Marathon** in an impressive **6 hours, 31 minutes, and 25 seconds**, coming close to breaking the course record set in **2021**.
With aspirations to turn professional in boxing next year, Ellis remains grounded in his love for the sport. His journey began at **Ysgol Godre’r Berwyn**, where he first discovered his passion for running, later merging it with his boxing pursuits.
Ellis’s future looks promising as he continues to balance his boxing ambitions with his accomplishments in hybrid fitness racing. His remarkable journey can be followed on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok under the handle **@GwionEllis**. As a young athlete, his story serves as an inspiration to many, illustrating that dedication and adaptability can lead to extraordinary achievements.
