Everton Eyes Josh Sargent as Striker Solution Amid Scoring Struggles
Everton is reportedly considering a renewed pursuit of striker Josh Sargent as the club grapples with significant scoring challenges in the ongoing 2025-26 Premier League season. The Toffees have struggled to find the back of the net, recording only seven goals since the start of the campaign. This lack of offensive production has raised concerns for manager David Moyes, particularly regarding the performance of current forwards like Beto and Thierno Barry, who have yet to contribute meaningfully to the team’s goal tally.
After a disappointing start, Everton’s attacking woes have become a focal point for the club. Beto, in particular, has not met expectations, while Barry has failed to score since joining the squad earlier this summer. With the pressure mounting, Moyes may need to explore additional options to bolster his attack as the January transfer window approaches. Sargent, who is currently playing for Norwich City in the Championship, has emerged as a potential candidate, having previously been linked with a move to Merseyside.
Josh Sargent’s Impressive Championship Form
Sargent has made a strong impact at Norwich, netting five goals in eight Championship matches this season. His performance has drawn commendation from former Norwich manager David Wagner, who described him as a “complete striker” in an interview on March 5, 2024. Last season, Sargent scored 15 goals in 33 appearances, showcasing his ability to perform consistently in a challenging league.
Despite Norwich’s struggles, currently positioned 19th in the Championship, Sargent’s individual success has not gone unnoticed. His ongoing form indicates he may be too good for the second tier of English football, prompting renewed interest from Premier League clubs, including Everton. While the Toffees previously explored the possibility of acquiring Sargent, a transfer did not materialize at that time.
Evaluating the Risks and Potential Rewards
Bryan King, a noted football analyst, has expressed support for Everton’s potential move for Sargent. In comments to Goodison News, he stated, “He’d certainly be a good option. Everton let Calvert-Lewin go for free, so anything they’re going to bring in has got to be a better standard than him.” King acknowledged that Sargent’s scoring ability could significantly benefit the Toffees, although he also noted the inherent risks of signing players from lower leagues.
The financial implications of such a transfer cannot be overlooked. Sargent is under contract with Norwich until 2028, which means any transfer fee would likely be substantial. Additionally, while Sargent has demonstrated his capabilities in the Championship, there remains uncertainty regarding his performance at the Premier League level. Critics argue that if Everton is to resolve its scoring difficulties, the club should prioritize acquiring a proven Premier League striker.
As Everton weighs its options, the situation continues to evolve. With the January transfer window on the horizon, the club’s decision-making regarding potential signings like Sargent will be critical in shaping its offensive strategy for the remainder of the season. The Toffees hope to turn their scoring fortunes around and secure a more competitive position in the league standings.
