Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has been appointed as the new technical director of FC Twente, effective from February 1, 2026. This announcement comes four months after his dismissal from Bayer Leverkusen, where he lasted just three matches in charge. Ten Hag’s return to Twente marks a significant chapter in his career, as he steps into a role at the club where he began both his playing and coaching journey.

FC Twente confirmed Ten Hag’s appointment on Tuesday, stating he will succeed current technical director Jan Streuer, who plans to retire at the end of the season. The club has signed Ten Hag to a contract that extends until mid-2028. While he will not begin his duties until the start of the 2026/27 season, he will start working with Twente’s football organization in preparation for the new campaign.

Ten Hag expressed his enthusiasm for returning to Twente, where he has strong ties as a former player and coach. “I think it’s wonderful and special to return to FC Twente, where I’ve been a supporter at Het Diekman since I was a young boy. My football and coaching careers began here,” he stated on the club’s website. His responsibilities will include recruitment, overseeing youth development, and enhancing the club’s competitive standards.

Career Ups and Downs

Ten Hag’s recent career has seen significant highs and lows. After leaving Ajax, where he achieved considerable success, including three Eredivisie titles and a deep run in the Champions League, he took the helm at Manchester United. During his tenure, he secured the League Cup and FA Cup, solidifying his reputation as one of the club’s most effective managers in recent history. However, a disappointing start to the 2024/25 season led to his dismissal in October 2024.

Subsequently, he joined Bayer Leverkusen, replacing Xabi Alonso as head coach. Unfortunately, his time at the Bundesliga club was brief, culminating in his departure after just two defeats and a draw. The challenges he faced included the loss of several key players, which hampered his ability to establish a competitive squad.

A Return to Familiar Ground

FC Twente holds a special place in Ten Hag’s heart. He enjoyed three spells as a player at the club and began his coaching career with the under-17 team before moving up to assistant coach under Steve McClaren and Fred Rutten. His new role as technical director will be his first non-coaching position in a decade, transitioning from managing teams to focusing on the developmental aspect of the club.

The club’s management is optimistic about Ten Hag’s return, believing his extensive experience in youth development and elite sports culture will bolster FC Twente’s technical foundation. As he prepares to lead the club into a new era, fans and stakeholders alike are eager to see how his leadership will shape the future of FC Twente.

With this significant appointment, Erik ten Hag is not just stepping into a new role; he is returning to his roots, aiming to strengthen a club that has been a crucial part of his football journey.
