Former England rugby player Joe Marler faced a surprising turn of events during the finale of the BBC hit show Celebrity Traitors. Despite being a fan favourite and displaying remarkable strategy throughout the competition, Marler was unexpectedly betrayed by his close ally, comedian Nick Mohammed, leading to Marler’s elimination and paving the way for Alan Carr to claim victory.

In the dramatic final episode, which aired recently, Marler, who earned 95 international caps for England, showcased his wit and skill in identifying the traitors among the contestants. His efforts appeared to put him on track for success, especially after he correctly identified Carr and Mohammed as accomplices of traitor Jonathan Ross. However, in a shocking twist, Mohammed revealed Marler’s identity as the faithful, leading to Carr’s unexpected triumph.

The England Rugby social media account captured the moment, showing players in disbelief as they witnessed Mohammed’s revelation. Not all players were glued to the screen, though. Ellis Genge, a current England international, expressed his admiration for Marler’s participation, stating, “Joe’s made for that sort of stuff. He’s a proper laugh.” However, he added, “Reality TV cringes me out,” indicating his personal feelings about the genre.

The emotional finale also saw Carr in tears as he disclosed his status as a traitor to Mohammed and historian David Olusoga, while speaking to host Claudia Winkleman. Carr announced that the prize money of £87,500 would be donated to a charity focused on children’s cancer, specifically for neuroblastoma research. Reflecting on his unexpected success, Carr shared on the visual podcast Uncloaked, “It still hasn’t sunk in, it’s insane.”

Carr admitted he never anticipated reaching the finale, revealing that his agent had already scheduled commitments for the following week, believing that Carr would be eliminated early due to his poor poker face. He humorously remarked, “I go through customs I start sweating… I’ve got the worst poker face going.”

Throughout the competition, Carr employed his sense of humour as a strategic tool. He noted, “My sense of humour was probably more useful to me than a shield,” highlighting how his comedic timing helped deflect suspicion from his actions as a traitor.

The unexpected outcomes of the Celebrity Traitors finale not only provided entertainment but also sparked conversation among the rugby community, showcasing Marler’s charisma and the unpredictable nature of reality television.
