A driver has been charged with multiple offences after he used his vehicle to ram into a crowd of over 100 people celebrating a victory parade in Liverpool. Paul Doyle, 54, expressed remorse, stating, “I’ve just ruined my family’s life,” during a court hearing that took place on May 26, 2023. The incident left numerous individuals injured, sparking outrage and horror among the parade attendees.

During the hearing at the city’s crown court, prosecutors described Doyle as a “family man” who was “in a rage” when he violently drove his Ford Galaxy, weighing nearly 1.9 tonnes, into the crowd. The chaotic scene unfolded within a span of two minutes, as Doyle’s vehicle collided with numerous bystanders, including children, in an attempt to navigate through the throng.

Doyle pleaded guilty to a staggering 31 offences, which include dangerous driving, affray, and multiple charges of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent. His actions resulted in injuries to 29 victims, whose ages ranged from six months to 77 years. The youngest victim, Teddy Eveson, was thrown approximately 15 feet from his pram during the rampage. Doyle admitted attempting to cause GBH to the infant.

Details of the Incident

The prosecution presented harrowing footage of the incident, which was shown multiple times in court. In clips captured by dashcam, Doyle could be heard shouting at pedestrians, demanding they “move” and using profane language. Witnesses described a dramatic shift in atmosphere, as the crowd’s joyful celebration turned to panic. One brave individual, Daniel Barr, leapt into the back of Doyle’s vehicle and managed to shift it into park, preventing further chaos.

Prosecutor Paul Greaney KC articulated the gravity of the situation, stating, “The prosecution case is that the defendant had used the vehicle as a weapon over that period of time.” He highlighted that Doyle’s actions not only caused injuries but also instilled fear among those who believed they were attending a festive event. As footage showed a pram overturned and children being pulled to safety, the emotional toll on victims and their families was palpable in the courtroom.

Doyle’s motivations were scrutinized, with Greaney noting that although he initially intended to pick up a friend and family members from the celebrations, his subsequent rage led to catastrophic consequences. The prosecutor emphasized that Doyle had the responsibility to exercise caution while driving and had opportunities to seek help from nearby police officers during the incident.

The Court’s Reaction

Doyle’s emotional breakdown in court was evident as he wept while viewing the footage of the rampage. He was visibly distressed, putting his head down and shutting his eyes as the horrific moments played out on screen. Many victims in the courtroom were similarly affected, with tears shed as they relived the traumatic event through the videos.

The court heard that Doyle, despite claiming he was in fear during the incident, ignored chances to stop and seek assistance from law enforcement. Greaney pointed out that the police were actively pursuing him at the time, and there were ample opportunities for Doyle to halt the dangerous situation he had created.

Doyle was arrested shortly after the incident on Water Street and faced charges later that week. His actions have left an indelible mark on the community, transforming a day of celebration into one marked by tragedy and loss.

As the sentencing hearing continues, the gravity of Doyle’s actions and their impact on the victims and their families remain at the forefront of the court’s considerations. The case has sparked discussions about public safety and the responsibilities of drivers in crowded environments, emphasizing the need for accountability in such grave matters.
