Badenoch United Dominates, Maintains Lead in Welfare League
Badenoch United secured their position at the top of the Badenoch and Strathspey Welfare League with a commanding performance, maintaining a six-point cushion over rivals Aviemore Thistle. In a series of matches played on March 15, 2024, both teams displayed contrasting fortunes that could shape the remainder of the season.
Aviemore Thistle faced FC Abernethy and quickly took control of the game, scoring eight goals to one. The match began with a long throw from Craig Macleod that set up Wayne Cathcart for an early goal just five minutes in. Following this, Ross Peters converted a penalty, extending the lead to 2-0. Despite Matt Reynolds scoring for Abernethy, Thistle responded with a remarkable five-goal flurry, showcasing their offensive prowess.
Kane Davies initiated the blitz with a goal in the 54th minute, followed by a brace from Peters. Davies then assisted Kalen Clark for the sixth goal before completing his hat-trick shortly after. Kepa Roy capped off the scoring on 78 minutes. Abernethy’s night ended on a sour note with Alex Smith receiving a red card, leaving them with ten men.
In another fixture, Badenoch United faced Grantown Rovers and delivered an overwhelming performance, winning 17-0. The Rovers struggled with squad numbers, and United wasted no time in taking advantage. John Fowler opened the scoring in the third minute, followed by quick goals from Svend Pedersen and Antonio Burnett.
The first half concluded with United leading 9-0, thanks to a dominant display from Finlay McBain, who netted five goals throughout the match. United continued their offensive onslaught in the second half, with additional goals from Dougal Cameron and Sam Cairns, who ended the night with a hat-trick of his own.
The results leave Badenoch United firmly in control, six points ahead of Aviemore Thistle. Both teams will meet again soon, with crucial matches scheduled in the upcoming Capaldi Cup and league encounters. The immediate clash on Friday will be pivotal as they vie for cup glory.
As the teams prepare for their next matches, the excitement builds within the league. Badenoch United and Aviemore Thistle are set for a highly anticipated showdown, which could further define the championship race in the weeks to come.
