Arteta Downplays Arsenal’s 9-Point Lead After Recent Victory
Mikel Arteta has stated that Arsenal’s nine-point advantage at the top of the Premier League means “nothing” despite their recent victory, which further intensified pressure on their closest rivals. The Gunners secured a win against Fulham on Saturday, with a stunning 20-yard strike from Fabio Vieira opening the scoring in the 42nd minute. Substitute Gyökeres then added two more goals late in the match, bringing his total to 13 goals in all competitions this season.
This victory marked a significant moment for Arsenal, as it is their largest lead since the final day of their unbeaten title-winning campaign in the 2003-04 season. Despite this, Arteta remains focused on the challenges ahead. He emphasized the need to concentrate on winning more matches rather than dwelling on their current position.
“The gap means nothing,” Arteta said. “We still have to win so many games to achieve what we want, so let’s not focus on that. We’ve done our job now, but we need to assess that, try to improve it, and get ready for our next match on Thursday.”
As Arsenal awaits Manchester City’s response, they will be watching closely as City prepares to face last season’s champions on Sunday. City has struggled at this venue, having won only once in their last 22 league visits.
Gyökeres, who joined Arsenal from Sporting Lisbon for a reported fee of €73.5 million (approximately $86 million), has recently found his form after a challenging start to the season. Arteta praised his character and work ethic, noting the importance of consistency in training and performance.
“[He is] the type of character that we expected,” Arteta remarked. “When you put that shirt on, it comes with a lot of responsibility and huge expectations. You need to live with that. There will be moments where it goes really well and others where it’s tough.”
Arteta highlighted Gyökeres’ focus on his daily responsibilities and his determination to contribute to the team’s success. He commended the forward’s commitment to understanding his teammates and demanding the types of movements and deliveries he requires.
As the Premier League season progresses, Arsenal’s journey continues, with Arteta and his squad determined to maintain their momentum and push for the title.
