Amorim Supports Bayindir After Goalkeeping Mistake in United Loss

Ruben Amorim, the head coach of Manchester United, has publicly backed goalkeeper Altay Bayindir following a critical error that contributed to the team’s 1-0 loss against Arsenal at Old Trafford. Despite suggestions that a new goalkeeper is needed before the transfer window closes on September 1, 2023, Amorim reaffirmed his confidence in Bayindir, who was chosen to start the match after Andre Onana missed the pre-season due to a hamstring injury.
During the match, Bayindir’s mistake occurred when he failed to properly handle a corner, allowing Arsenal to score the only goal of the game. In a post-match press conference, Amorim defended his decision and expressed his belief in Bayindir’s abilities. “He [Bayindir] chooses to get the ball, but he’s getting pushed. That is my feeling when I see the play,” Amorim stated. “He needs to use his hands to catch the ball, not push players. He chose to push players and let the ball pass.”
Ahead of the upcoming match against Arsenal, Amorim confirmed that Onana was fit to return, although he had only completed three training sessions with the team. Amorim clarified that Onana was not omitted from the squad, stating, “I didn’t drop Onana from the squad. It’s not the case of dropping Onana. It’s about not putting him in just one week without seeing the game, without time, with training.”
Despite the loss, Amorim expressed pride in his team’s performance. Manchester United created several chances, including a shot that hit the post and efforts saved by Arsenal’s goalkeeper. “It’s that feeling that we played better,” Amorim reflected. “We were the better team, but in the end, we lost the game. I’m really proud of the work that they put on the field, and that is important to move forward.”
The match outcome has intensified speculation surrounding striker Rasmus Højlund, who was not included in the squad against Arsenal. His future at Manchester United remains uncertain, with Milan‘s sporting director acknowledging interest in Højlund. “Højlund is a good option for us. We are thinking about him, but in the transfer market, you never know what could happen,” he remarked.
New signing Benjamin Sesko made his debut for United during the match, coming off the bench. Amorim emphasized the competitive nature of the squad, noting, “It is a fight for places. We’ll see what is going to happen in the market. There are different characteristics. Rasmus has the same characteristics as Benjamin Sesko, so we need to choose.”
As the transfer deadline approaches, United’s management faces crucial decisions regarding team composition and strategy moving forward. Amorim’s steadfast support for his players, particularly Bayindir, signals a commitment to building confidence and cohesion within the squad as they strive for success in the Premier League.
