Afanu Latić has been awarded the Zaim Azemović Award for 2023, presented by the Culture Centre of Rožaje. The recognition celebrates his collection of stories titled “Pod oštrim uglom”, published by Fokalizator in Podgorica. This accolade highlights Latić’s contributions to contemporary literature, showcasing his ability to intertwine past and present narratives.
Dr. Melida Travančić, a notable Bosnian-Herzegovinian writer and critic, praised Latić’s work, stating, “The book of stories ‘Pod oštrim uglom’ connects the past with the present and hints at the future. The best way to achieve this is through storytelling, which allows us to perceive the world around us differently.” Travančić’s endorsement emphasizes the book’s thematic depth and literary significance.
Born in Berane in 1983, Latić’s educational journey began at the Hajro Šahmanović Elementary School in Plav. He later attended the Gazi Husrev-beg Medresa in Sarajevo, where he developed a passion for literature and languages. Following his secondary education, Latić pursued studies in Oriental Philology, focusing on Arabic and Turkish languages and literature.
After completing his studies, Latić returned to Montenegro, where he took on the role of Arabic language professor at the Mehmed Fatih Medresa in Podgorica. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he is also engaged in translation from Arabic and is known for his poetry and prose writing.
The Zaim Azemović Award is a significant accolade within the region, aimed at recognizing literary excellence. Latić’s achievement not only celebrates his individual talent but also contributes to the broader cultural landscape of Montenegro and the literary community. As he continues to explore the intersections of language, culture, and storytelling, Latić’s influence on readers and aspiring writers is likely to grow.
The award ceremony took place in Rožaje, drawing attention to the importance of literary recognition in fostering cultural dialogue and appreciation for diverse narratives. With Latić’s work resonating on both a local and international level, the future of his literary career looks promising.
