UKRI Funds 17 Innovative Projects to Transform Mental Health Care
The UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) is investing in 17 projects aimed at developing immersive technology solutions for mental health care. This initiative falls under the agency’s Mindset XR programme, which focuses on enhancing digital mental health services. The selected projects are recognized for their potential to create scalable solutions that could integrate into the formal mental healthcare system in the UK.
Among the conditions being targeted are emotional-based school avoidance (EBSA), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and addiction recovery. A notable project from a consortium in Northern Ireland is working on a virtual reality (VR) programme designed to provide coaching for individuals dealing with substance abuse. This innovative approach simulates real-life therapy sessions, allowing participants to engage in a supportive environment.
Lord Vallance, the UK’s Science Minister, highlighted the transformative power of these projects. He stated, “These projects are shining examples of how innovation can transform people’s quality of life, by helping those with severe mental health conditions to take on everyday tasks that can otherwise feel impossible.” He emphasized the use of technologies like smart glasses to assist individuals suffering from debilitating depression and games aimed at enhancing social skills among children.
Dr. Cynthia Bullock, Director of Healthy Lives at Innovate UK, elaborated on the significance of this funding. She remarked, “Through this latest Mindset investment, we’re fostering powerful collaborations between the UK’s immersive technology sector and mental health providers, moving beyond general wellbeing tools toward innovative treatments for people with mental health conditions.” This funding aims to alleviate the impairment, disability, and distress experienced by individuals across various stages of life in the UK.
UKRI, established in 2018 as a non-departmental public body, operates under the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT). Its mission is to facilitate growth in companies through the commercialization of new products, processes, and services. The current investment in immersive technology exemplifies UKRI’s commitment to advancing mental health care solutions.
As these projects unfold, they hold the promise of significantly enhancing the quality of mental health services available in the UK, potentially reshaping the landscape of care for countless individuals in need.
