UK Launches Campaign in Spain and Germany to Boost Research Collaborations
The UK government has initiated a campaign aimed at enhancing research partnerships in Spain and Germany under the Horizon Europe program. This initiative seeks to position the UK as a premier collaborator in research and innovation, emphasizing the advantages of working alongside UK researchers, universities, and businesses.
Strengthening Ties through Horizon Europe
Horizon Europe, which operates until 2027 with a budget surpassing £82 billion (€95.5 billion), facilitates international research collaboration to tackle global challenges. By engaging with this program, UK organizations can access substantial funding and partner with leading entities across Europe and beyond. This campaign is part of a broader strategy to enhance international partnerships and stimulate economic growth through innovation, as outlined in the UK’s Plan for Change.
Spain and Germany are identified as crucial collaborators due to their robust research and development capabilities, making them ideal partners in this initiative.
Highlighting Successful Collaborations
One notable example of effective collaboration supported by Horizon funding is the ESCALATE project. This initiative, funded through Horizon Europe’s predecessor program, united UK, Spanish, and German partners to develop affordable electric heavy goods vehicles (HGVs). The project, which had a budget of £19 million (€22 million), featured Yorkshire-based Electra Commercial Vehicles working in tandem with Spain’s Primafrio Corporation and Germany’s RWTH Aachen University. Their cooperative efforts have led to advancements in modular electric vehicle design and battery technology, fostering new commercial opportunities in electric transportation.
The UK has a proven track record in scientific achievement, having secured 56 European Research Council Advanced Grants in June 2025, totaling approximately £120 million (€140 million). This places the UK ahead of any other nation in acquiring these grants, which support influential projects across various sectors, including healthcare and artificial intelligence.
With its prestigious universities and esteemed research institutions, the UK is well-positioned to deliver significant value to research collaborations throughout Europe. This campaign aims to further promote cross-border partnerships and maintain the UK’s status as a leader in global innovation.
Facilitating Connections and Support
To enhance connections between UK and European researchers and businesses, the campaign will feature a series of networking events throughout 2025. These events are designed to cultivate partnerships and streamline access to Horizon Europe opportunities. Additionally, grants will be available to assist UK businesses in covering expenses associated with attending European research and development events. This initiative is integral to increasing UK participation in Horizon Europe, ensuring that more organizations can reap the benefits of the program.
Support for researchers is also provided through the Horizon Hub, managed by Innovate UK and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). This platform offers practical guidance on funding calls, the application process, and connections with Horizon experts and National Contact Points.
The timing of this campaign coincides with the visit of Spain’s Prime Minister to London, underscoring the significance of international collaboration. By showcasing successful real-world projects and providing tangible tools for cooperation, the UK aims to strengthen its scientific relationships with European partners while fostering long-term growth in high-potential sectors.
