Smart Thermostat Alert: Google Nest Devices to Lose Connectivity

Homeowners using smart thermostats in the UK face a significant disruption as certain models of the popular Google Nest Learning Thermostat will cease to function by the end of the week. From October 25, 2025, three specific models will become unpaired from both the Google Nest app and Google Home app, impacting how users manage their home heating systems.

The affected devices include the original Nest Learning Thermostat (1st generation, 2011), the Nest Learning Thermostat (2nd generation, 2012), and the European version of the 2nd generation model (2014). Google announced this decision in a statement, indicating that these models would no longer receive software updates and would lose remote control capabilities through platforms like Google Assistant.

The Nest Learning Thermostat revolutionized smart home technology when it was introduced in 2011. Homeowners have enjoyed the convenience of adjusting their heating settings directly from their smartphones, but this functionality will be discontinued for the affected models. As the Google Nest support page states: “Starting October 25, 2025, your device will be unpaired and removed from your Nest app or Home app.” This change will also affect connected features such as Home/Away Assist and the integration with Nest Protect smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.

A spokesperson for Google explained that the decision to phase out older devices is part of the company’s strategy to invest in newer technologies. They stated: “To fully invest in these advancements and bring you the most cutting-edge features on our latest generation of Nest thermostats, we will be transitioning away from supporting some of our earliest devices.”

Customers who own one of the impacted thermostats will need to act quickly, as they will only have a few days to prepare for the disconnection. Although the thermostats will remain operational, users will lose the ability to control them remotely. Existing heating schedules will still function, but without app integration, managing these settings will be less convenient.

Google is not offering free replacements for the discontinued models, and it has stopped selling Nest thermostats in the UK. Instead, the tech giant is providing a 50 percent discount on the Wired Smart Thermostat X – Starter Kit, which is available for £109.99, down from the original price of £159.99. This offer aims to assist customers in transitioning to a newer device.

In light of this situation, Google has acknowledged the unique challenges posed by heating systems in Europe, which require various hardware and software solutions. The spokesperson elaborated, stating: “Heating systems in Europe are unique and have a variety of hardware and software requirements that make it challenging to build for the diverse set of homes.”

Moving forward, Google plans to collaborate with established smart thermostat manufacturers to enhance the energy management experience on the Google Home platform. This partnership is part of Google’s ongoing commitment to its users across Europe.

Affected customers can expect to receive an email from Google containing a personalized link to access the discount on the Tado device. As the industry shifts towards more advanced technologies, homeowners are advised to stay informed about their smart home devices and any potential impacts on functionality.
