Ryan McRitchie Leads Forres Mechanics to Cup Victory; Huntly Prepares for Shield Clash
Ryan McRitchie celebrated a remarkable achievement on Saturday as he played a pivotal role in leading Forres Mechanics to victory in the North of Scotland Cup. The team staged an impressive comeback, overcoming a two-goal deficit to defeat Clachnacuddin 3-2 in a thrilling final held at Nairn’s Station Park. This victory marks McRitchie’s third North of Scotland Cup win, having previously triumphed with Rothes in 2021 and Brora Rangers last year.
Reflecting on the match, McRitchie, who is in his second spell with Forres, expressed his joy at winning the cup with a club where he feels most at home. “My time at Brora didn’t really work out, and the manager here was always eager to get me back,” he said. The 26-year-old defender noted, “I’ve been at a few clubs over the years, but I’ve felt most comfortable here at Forres; it feels like home.”
The victory was particularly sweet for McRitchie, who has a knack for scoring in finals. His equalising goal against Clachnacuddin not only turned the tide of the match but also showcased his ability to anticipate crucial moments. “There was a bit of luck with Mark Ridgers dropping it, but I anticipated it and managed to get there to score, which was really pleasing,” he remarked.
McRitchie’s success is not only a personal triumph but also a testament to the teamwork and resilience displayed by Forres. He noted the importance of character in high-pressure situations, stating, “Sometimes in the past we’ve conceded goals and we’ve folded, but we showed a lot of character in what was a huge game for us.”
Huntly Aims to Upset Aberdeen in Shield Match
Looking ahead, Huntly prepares for a challenging encounter against Aberdeen in the Morrison Motors Aberdeenshire Shield. Manager Colin Charlesworth has urged his players to remain positive as they seek to turn around their fortunes following a difficult stretch of form. The match will take place at Christie Park on Tuesday night, with Huntly aiming to secure only their second victory in their last nine matches across all competitions.
Charlesworth remains optimistic despite the team’s recent struggles. “In terms of our levels of performance, we’re not far away, but it’s about turning performances into results,” he explained. He acknowledged that many teams experience challenging phases during the season, emphasizing the need for his players to focus on the basics. “If we can start in the right manner against Aberdeen, then who knows what could happen,” he added.
The manager also highlighted the significance of cup competitions for the club, stating, “We want to progress in the cups, we want to get to finals, and we want to try to win something.” Although it is only the first round of the Shield, Charlesworth challenged his players to aspire to make history by becoming the first Huntly squad to lift the trophy.
As Huntly gears up to face a formidable Aberdeen side, Charlesworth is aware of the challenges that lie ahead. “They’ll be fit, energetic full-time players with a lot of quality on the ball, who will try to make our life difficult,” he remarked. He noted the uncertainty surrounding which first-team players might participate but affirmed that regardless of the lineup, Aberdeen will field a well-drilled and talented team.
With both teams eager to make their mark in the competition, the upcoming match promises to be an exciting encounter. As Huntly seeks to overcome their recent challenges, they will look to turn the tide against a strong opponent in Aberdeen.
