London Launches Innovative Solar Project to Cut Bills for Residents

A new initiative in London is set to transform the energy landscape for vulnerable residents in social housing by providing direct access to affordable solar power. This pioneering project, which utilizes solar microgrids, aims to make the green energy transition more accessible for those most in need.

The scheme involves the installation of 4,000 solar panels across three housing estates, including Frampton Park in the borough of Hackney. Previously, rooftop solar panels in these areas only contributed to the national grid, but this innovative approach allows tenants to benefit directly from the energy generated on their rooftops. The project is expected to generate one megawatt of power, which will cover approximately a fifth of the energy needs for the buildings involved.

According to estimates from Emergent Energy, the clean energy developer behind the initiative, about 800 households will see their energy bills reduced by up to 15%. “No one should miss out on the benefits of locally generated clean energy because of their income level or the type of home they live in,” stated Reg Platt, founder and CEO of Emergent Energy. He emphasized that this program aims to provide tangible savings for residents of social housing flats through rooftop solar energy.

The initiative has garnered support from Hackney Council, with Sarah Young highlighting the importance of ensuring an equitable energy transition. “One of the most important things for us is for this energy transition to be just,” she remarked, underscoring the project’s focus on enhancing livability for the borough’s most vulnerable citizens.

Emergent Energy has expressed confidence that this model can be replicated across other sites in the UK. Platt mentioned that the project is designed to be self-funding, which means it can deliver these benefits to potentially millions of residents without relying on government funding.
