A pioneering veterinary research centre in Inverness is set to welcome the public on November 13, 2024. The Rural and Veterinary Innovation Centre (RAVIC), located at Inverness Campus, aims to provide insights into animal and human health. Visitors can explore various facilities, including post-mortem areas and learn vital skills like CPR for dogs.

The open day, themed “People, Pets and Pathogens,” will run from 10:00 to 15:00. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with experts in animal disease and public health. In the post-mortem room, veterinarians from Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC) will discuss their work in diagnosing and monitoring animal diseases, offering a glimpse into their critical role in safeguarding health.

Budding veterinarians and scientists are encouraged to speak with SRUC staff regarding educational opportunities and career paths. Additionally, Scottish Vet Referrals will demonstrate dog CPR techniques and address general pet care inquiries.

Exploring Innovations in Health and Agriculture

Visitors will also learn about antimicrobial resistance in pets, a significant area of research that could impact both human and animal health. The event will feature agricultural experts who will present industry innovations, as well as discussions on aquaculture, including gill health and artificial intelligence applications.

The RAVIC facility was launched with a substantial investment of £12.5 million, aiming to foster innovation and job creation within Scotland’s health, agriculture, and aquaculture sectors. This initiative was developed by SRUC with funding from the European Regional Development Fund and The Scottish Funding Council, and was officially inaugurated by Princess Anne in March 2024.

By opening its doors to the public, RAVIC hopes to raise awareness of animal health issues and promote engagement in veterinary science, making a significant contribution to Scotland’s health landscape.
