Farmers Invited to Share Experiences in New Research Project

A new research initiative is reaching out to farmers to discuss the challenges they face, ranging from food security to climate change. Led by researcher Bethan John, the project aims to explore these important themes through a series of free storytelling and filmmaking workshops. Participants will have the opportunity to create community-driven films that reflect their real-life experiences.

The workshops will take place at Bancyfelin Village Hall on October 1, 2023, and at Crymych Market Hall on October 2, 2023, both from 17:30 to 20:30. John, who grew up in a rural farming community near Carmarthen and now resides in North Pembrokeshire, emphasizes the wealth of knowledge within rural communities. “There is so much expertise within the rural communities where I live,” she stated. “One of the aims of this project is to capture and value this knowledge while exploring a diversity of views and experiences.”

The workshops will be conducted in both Welsh and English, catering to a small group of participants. No prior experience in filmmaking or storytelling is required, as attendees will receive comprehensive training throughout the sessions. “There’s a wealth of academic research that demonstrates the importance of storytelling and creative expression as a way of reflecting on and engaging with complex issues that can help solve real-world problems,” John added.

This project represents a collaboration among local organizations and is funded by relevant stakeholders, aiming to foster community resilience and address pressing agricultural challenges.
