Black Hawk College Unveils $29 Million CTE Center for Future Careers
Black Hawk College has officially opened a newly renovated career and technical education (CTE) center, marking a significant investment in the future of its students. The facility, which encompasses 66,000 square feet of educational space, features specialized areas dedicated to e-sports, cybersecurity, forensic science, industrial maintenance, and mechatronics, among other disciplines. In addition, a dedicated 4,000 square-foot area has been constructed for welding, fabrication, and grinding.
Construction for this ambitious project commenced in 2022, culminating in its opening in September 2023 in time for the fall semester. The total investment for the renovations reached $29 million, underscoring the college’s commitment to providing state-of-the-art facilities for its students.
Enhancing Career Readiness
According to Steven Frommelt, executive vice president of finance and administration, the new facility is designed to equip students with the skills necessary for their future careers. “It’ll be the current technology that we have in the working world, so they’re able to come in and have a practical application,” Frommelt stated. He emphasized that being the lowest-cost provider of education in the area enables the college to offer valuable services to the local community.
The renovations extend beyond traditional classroom settings. Frommelt mentioned that the new facilities could also accommodate outside programs, such as the College for Kids initiative. This flexibility is further enhanced by the building’s adaptability to future technological advancements, including artificial intelligence.
A Vision for the Future
Black Hawk College President Jeremy Thomas expressed optimism about the impact of the new facilities on students. “I hope students are excited. In fact, I know they will be. They’re getting to get trained in a world-class facility. We’re investing in them. We’re investing in the Quad-Cities,” he remarked. Thomas believes that the upgraded CTE center will foster outstanding educational experiences, positioning students for success in their chosen fields.
As the college embarks on this new chapter, it aims to provide an environment that not only meets current educational standards but is also prepared to embrace future innovations. The renovated space is a testament to Black Hawk College’s commitment to enhancing career and technical education for its students and the broader community.
