Authorities Utilize Pacemaker Data in Search for Missing Woman
Authorities in Arizona are employing innovative techniques to locate 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, who was reported missing on February 1, 2024. Guthrie, mother of NBC’s Today show host Savannah Guthrie, was last seen after being dropped off at her home the previous evening. After failing to make contact with her family, a large-scale search was initiated, raising concerns for her safety.
Pacemaker Data Offers New Leads
Investigators are now focusing on data from Guthrie’s heart pacemaker, hoping it may provide crucial insights into her whereabouts. Dr. Laurence Epstein, System Director of Electrophysiology at Northwell Health, explained that specialized equipment is being used to detect Bluetooth signals emitted by pacemakers. While this technology offers potential leads, he cautioned that a pacemaker is not equipped with GPS capabilities. The Bluetooth signal has a limited range, and once the device is out of range from its paired smartphone for over 24 hours, it essentially goes off the digital grid.
Dr. Epstein noted that the connection between the pacemaker and the phone was disrupted on the day Nancy went missing. He emphasized that although the digital link is severed, the pacemaker continues to function normally, meaning that the absence of a signal does not imply that the device has failed or that the patient is in distress.
Investigation Progress and Family Impact
The use of remote monitoring technology has revolutionized patient care, enabling doctors to detect issues with pacemakers much faster than in the past. Dr. Epstein highlighted that this advancement allows healthcare providers to identify potential problems within hours, significantly enhancing patient safety.
The investigation into Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance remains active, with law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, conducting extensive searches. Surveillance footage has revealed a masked individual at her front porch, described as approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall. Further forensic analysis indicates that the suspect is male and of average build, carrying a black backpack. So far, no arrests have been made, and investigators have not disclosed a definitive theory regarding the case.
As the search extended into its 33rd day, Savannah Guthrie returned to the Today show studio for an off-camera meeting with colleagues. In a message to her team, she expressed her determination, stating, “I wanted you to know that I’m still standing, and I still have hope.” Her resilience in the face of uncertainty resonates with many, as the community continues to rally around the search for her mother.
The case remains a priority for local authorities, with hopes that the combination of traditional investigative techniques and innovative technology will lead to a breakthrough in finding Nancy Guthrie.
