A young horse was euthanised after being discovered in severe distress in a field off Cookstown Road in Co Tyrone. The incident, which has drawn attention from animal welfare organizations and local authorities, highlights ongoing concerns regarding the care of horses in the area.

According to reports from the animal welfare organization My Lovely Horse, members of the public responded to calls for help after a young horse was found in dire condition. Fiona Harrison, one of the individuals who attended the scene, recounted the events. “The rescue organisation was over three hours away, so several of us attended the location to provide immediate assistance,” she said.

When they arrived, the horse was in poor condition. Harrison and others brought blankets to make the animal more comfortable while waiting for the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) and a veterinarian to arrive. Tragically, the vet determined that the horse had to be euthanised due to its condition.

Discovery of Additional Animals Raises Concerns

The situation took a somber turn when, upon returning to the field the following day, Harrison and others discovered additional deceased horses, including what is believed to be the young horse’s mother, which appeared to have been dead for some time. The euthanised horse was left in the field covered with blankets alongside the other dead animals.

Harrison noted that the distressing scene had affected many of those who witnessed it. “Members of the public were extremely distressed by the incident,” she remarked.

A spokesperson for Mid Ulster Council confirmed that Animal Welfare has received a report regarding the death of one horse in the Dungannon area, stating, “This matter is part of an open and active investigation; we are unable to provide any further comment at this time.”

The Ulster Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (USPCA) also expressed their sadness over the incident. In a statement on social media, they highlighted the tragic consequences of neglecting animal care. “No animal should have to suffer in this way,” they stated.

The USPCA emphasized the responsibility of horse owners to ensure their animals receive regular care, shelter, and veterinary attention. They called for those who neglect this duty to be held accountable and urged anyone with information about the incident to report it to the PSNI.

This incident has sparked a broader conversation about animal welfare and the importance of responsible ownership. As the investigation continues, many hope it will lead to actionable changes that protect vulnerable animals in the region.
