Victim’s Courage Shines as Abuser Receives 2.5-Year Sentence

A 24-year-old man has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison for a series of violent attacks against a woman, marking a significant moment in the fight against domestic abuse. Leo Tuplin, a resident of Duncombe Gardens in Grimsby, pleaded guilty to charges including non-fatal strangulation, actual bodily harm, and criminal damage. The sentencing took place at Grimsby Crown Court on March 15, 2024.
The case began when Humberside Police received a report in December 2022 from a third-party support agency. The victim disclosed a violent altercation that escalated to her being pushed with such force that furniture broke. Over the following days, she revealed a troubling pattern of abuse, including multiple violent incidents both at home and in public.
In response, police initiated an investigation, collecting witness statements and photographic evidence of the injuries sustained by the victim. This comprehensive approach led to Tuplin being identified and arrested in January 2023. While in custody, he denied the allegations, providing no comment during police questioning.
The victim, whose identity remains confidential for her safety, spoke out about the impact of Tuplin’s actions. “I want this to be a warning to other men like Tuplin, and I want to help protect other women who may be in a similar situation,” she said. “It was a living hell, and I won’t ever forget the flashbacks or the trauma which continues to affect my ability to trust.”
She emphasized her desire to raise awareness regarding domestic abuse, encouraging others to recognize signs of abuse and seek help. “The result here today shows that with the right support, survivors can find it in them to take the first step to escape the cycle of abuse,” she added. “You are not alone.”
Police and Legal Response to Domestic Violence
Detective Inspector Jayne Coutts from the Domestic Abuse and Safeguarding Investigation Teams commented on the case. She noted that despite Tuplin’s initial refusal to admit his wrongdoing, the victim demonstrated remarkable strength in her willingness to testify. This ultimately led to Tuplin pleading guilty, eliminating the need for a trial.
“Tuplin is a vicious bully who inflicted such force that furniture broke beneath her,” Coutts stated. “He caused bruising across her body on numerous occasions and made her fear for her life. The emotional and physical scars that she has endured cannot be underestimated.”
Coutts praised the victim’s bravery in reporting the abuse and participating in the legal process. She hopes this case will empower others who have experienced similar situations to come forward. “Violence against women and girls is wholly unacceptable,” she stressed. “We will always do everything we can to hold those accountable for such inhumane crimes.”
The police encourage anyone who has experienced or witnessed domestic abuse to report it. They can be reached via the non-emergency number 101, or in emergencies, individuals should call 999. For those unable to speak on the phone, there is a procedure to indicate danger by coughing or tapping the handset, which can alert the operator.
Tuplin’s sentencing serves as a reminder of the ongoing fight against domestic violence and the importance of supporting victims in their journey toward justice.
