UK Extends Military Training for Ukrainian Soldiers Until 2026

The United Kingdom will continue its military training for Ukrainian soldiers through at least the end of 2026. This extension of Operation Interflex was confirmed by Defence Secretary John Healey, who emphasized the UK’s commitment to ramping up support for Ukrainian forces as they prepare for upcoming independence celebrations.
More than 50,000 Ukrainian recruits have received training on British soil since the programme began. As Ukraine approaches its independence day on August 24, Healey stated, “We will continue to step up our support alongside allies, so that Ukraine can defend today and deter tomorrow.”
The Defence Secretary highlighted the importance of strengthening Ukraine’s armed forces amid ongoing Russian attacks. He noted that a robust Ukrainian military is essential not only for Ukraine’s security but also for the stability of Europe. “This matters to Ukraine and it matters to Britain. A secure Ukraine is a secure Europe,” he added.
Training Program Evolves to Meet Needs
Ukrainians will celebrate 34 years of independence from the Soviet Union, with over 2,000 Ukrainian recruits, British military personnel, and other supporters participating in celebratory events at one of the Interflex training sites in England.
Originally designed as a five-week basic combat training course, the Interflex programme has evolved into a seven-week curriculum. It now includes specialized courses aimed at enhancing leadership and command skills for officers. The Ministry of Defence has announced that British leaders are adapting the training to better align with Ukraine’s evolving military needs, placing greater emphasis on leadership instructor training.
Healey reiterated that the UK will continue to refine and expand its world-leading training support: “As the push for peace continues, we must make the Ukrainians into the strongest possible deterrent to secure that future peace.”
The ongoing partnership between Ukraine and the UK illustrates a deepening military collaboration, which not only aims to strengthen Ukraine’s defense capabilities but also benefits the UK by integrating lessons learned from the battlefield into its own armed forces.
As the situation in Ukraine remains dynamic, the commitment of the UK to support its military training efforts underscores the strategic importance of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in the face of external threats.
