Tom Homan Faces Backlash During Immigration Discussion at UTEP

A discussion on immigration enforcement featuring former acting ICE Director Tom Homan escalated into a heated confrontation at a Turning Point USA (TPUSA) event at the University of Texas at El Paso on December 4, 2023. Homan faced sharp criticism from attendees who branded him a “racist” and “traitor,” prompting a vigorous defense of his views on border security.

During the event, Homan was confronted by a man who shouted accusations at him. In response, Homan stated, “Call me what you want, I don’t care,” urging the critic to “grow a backbone” and take action to secure the border. This exchange highlighted the tensions surrounding immigration policies in the United States.

The same critic later linked Homan’s rhetoric to the actions of Patrick Crusius, the individual responsible for the 2019 mass shooting at a Walmart in El Paso. The man claimed that Crusius was influenced by beliefs similar to Homan’s, specifically referencing the Great Replacement Theory, a controversial far-right ideology suggesting that non-White immigrants are replacing the White population. Homan rejected these claims, describing the situation at the border as “a mess” and accusing the Biden administration of intentionally leaving it unsecured to attract more Democratic voters.

Outside the venue, dozens of protesters gathered to express their discontent with Homan’s appearance. Emil Esparza, a protester, described Homan’s visit as “insulting” and criticized both him and the administration he represents. She emphasized that El Paso, a border city with a significant Latino population, was not an appropriate venue for promoting Homan’s views on immigration enforcement.

Homan’s critiques of the Biden administration are not new. In January 2023, he labeled the current administration as the “first president in my lifetime to ever come into office and intentionally unsecure the border.” His comments during the TPUSA event align with his long-standing position advocating for stricter immigration policies, including the deportation of illegal immigrants.

In a statement after the event, TPUSA acknowledged that Homan chose El Paso for its geographic significance. The organization expressed disappointment at the local reaction, stating, “As students who have maintained a non-inflammatory approach, we are disappointed to see that the city has chosen to base their opinions off of stereotypes and assumptions.”

The intense exchange between Homan and his critics, coupled with the protests outside the university, underscores the deeply polarized political landscape surrounding immigration issues in the United States. As debates around border security continue, events like these reveal the passionate and often contentious views held by individuals on both sides of the immigration debate.
