TikTok Star Mariam Cisse Executed in Public by Jihadists
A public execution of TikTok star Mariam Cisse has shocked Mali, highlighting the country’s escalating security crisis. Cisse, known for her light-hearted videos on social issues and life in the Timbuktu region, was abducted on November 6, 2023, during a livestream at a local fair in the northern town of Tonka. Her suspected captors, affiliated with the militant group Jama’at Nasr al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), accused her of collaborating with government forces.
Cisse had garnered nearly 140,000 followers on TikTok, where she often expressed support for the Malian army, sometimes appearing in military attire. According to her brother, militants accused her of ‘informing the Malian army of their movements’ before taking her away. He recounted being forced to witness her execution in Independence Square on November 7, where she was killed in front of a crowd. An anonymous security source described the act as a “barbaric act,” confirming that Cisse was targeted for allegedly filming jihadists for the military.
Escalating Violence in Mali
The execution has raised alarm among local officials and analysts, who see it as an attempt to intimidate civilians and suppress support for the army. The region has faced escalating violence and severe fuel shortages due to JNIM’s ongoing blockade, which has disrupted farming and restricted access to essential services, including electricity and education. A local authority condemned the execution as an “ignoble act,” further emphasizing the deteriorating security situation.
Mali’s President Assimi Goïta recently urged citizens to conserve fuel while vowing to do “everything possible” to improve supply. Critics, including human rights experts, argue that this reflects the junta’s inability to effectively address the insurgency. Since seizing power in 2020 and 2021, the military government has severed ties with Western nations, including France, and sought assistance from Russian paramilitaries.
Analysts indicate that the junta is now prioritizing the protection of its regime over efforts to reclaim territory lost to jihadist groups. As tensions rise, both the United States and United Kingdom have withdrawn non-essential personnel from Mali, with several embassies advising their citizens to leave the country.
Implications for Mali’s Future
The killing of Cisse underscores the perilous conditions faced by individuals in Mali who express support for the government or the military. The actions of JNIM, which has been active since its formation in 2017, exemplify the challenges the Malian state faces in reestablishing control. The group remains one of the primary jihadist forces in the Sahel, alongside the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS).
As Mali grapples with this ongoing crisis, the international community watches closely, concerned about the potential for further instability in a region already marked by conflict and humanitarian issues. The future of Mali’s governance and security remains uncertain as the junta struggles to maintain order amid escalating violence and dwindling support.
