Humza Yousaf, the former First Minister of Scotland, and his wife, Nadia El-Nakla, expressed profound anguish over the dire situation facing their family members in Gaza. Speaking to STV News on October 24, 2023, they conveyed feelings of anger and helplessness as relatives endure starvation amid ongoing conflict in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. The couple’s concerns were intensified by the recent death of El-Nakla’s father’s cousin, shot in the street during a desperate attempt to obtain food.

El-Nakla shared harrowing details about her cousin, Sally, who remains trapped in Gaza along with her husband and their four children. “She feels like they’re going to die, and they’re just desperate to leave,” El-Nakla said. “She’s begging me if there’s anything we can do to leave. It’s heartbreaking, it’s unimaginable, and yet we’re watching it.” El-Nakla noted that she communicates with Sally daily but struggles to provide any reassurance. “I can’t tell them we can get you out, and there are no words of comfort to fill their stomach,” she lamented.

Tragic Losses and Political Responses

El-Nakla recounted the tragic circumstances surrounding her father’s cousin, who was shot in the stomach and subsequently run over by a tank while seeking food for his family. “He was one of my dad’s closest cousins. He didn’t need to die,” she said. “There was no reason he got killed in the street trying to get food for his family. You wouldn’t treat an animal that way.” The emotional toll of such losses deepens as the crisis in Gaza continues to escalate.

John Swinney, a senior Scottish politician, characterized the ongoing crisis in Gaza as a “genocide” following a recent event disrupted by pro-Palestinian protesters. Yousaf emphasized that the First Minister is actively working to raise awareness and apply pressure on the UK government. He asserted, “Calling it a genocide is the least any leader can do.” Yousaf called for “meaningful action” from the UK and other governments, advocating for sanctions against Israel and an arms embargo to isolate the nation much like apartheid-era South Africa.

Humanitarian Crisis Deepens

The humanitarian situation in Gaza has worsened significantly in recent weeks, with over 100 aid agencies warning of “mass starvation.” Israel has faced accusations of restricting food and essential supplies to the region. Witnesses and local health officials reported that crowds of desperate Palestinians were killed or injured while attempting to reach food distribution points on October 23, 2023. Since May, hundreds have died from Israeli fire while approaching aid convoys.

“People are slowly being killed,” Yousaf stated. “They know today is worse than yesterday, and they fear that tomorrow will be even worse than today. Every day is progressively getting even worse.”

In response to the escalating situation, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have claimed they only fired warning shots and disputed the reported death toll. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced plans to convene his Security Cabinet to discuss the next stages of military action in Gaza, suggesting that more intense operations may be forthcoming.

The situation remains dire, with the international community and humanitarian organizations calling for urgent intervention and support to alleviate the suffering of those caught in the conflict.
