Rob Jetten Sworn in as Netherlands’ Youngest Prime Minister
The Netherlands marked a significant milestone on February 23, 2026, as Rob Jetten was inaugurated as the youngest prime minister in the nation’s history. At just 38 years old, he also became the first openly gay individual to assume the role. Jetten’s ascent follows a snap election in October 2025, where his party, Democrats 66 (D66), achieved a historic result by securing 26 seats, narrowly defeating the far-right Freedom Party (PVV).
Jetten now leads a minority coalition government alongside the liberal-conservative VVD and the centre-right CDA, which together hold a total of 66 out of 150 seats in the Dutch parliament. Following his swearing-in, Jetten expressed his gratitude for the opportunity on social media, stating that it is a “tremendous honour.” He shared a photo with his cabinet members, captioned in Dutch, “Beëdigd. We gaan beginnen. Aan de slag,” which translates to “Sworn in. We’re going to begin. Let’s get to work.”
Born on March 25, 1987, in Veghel, Jetten was raised in Uden, North Brabant. He studied public administration at Radboud University, where he earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Prior to his political career, Jetten worked with ProRail, the state-owned railroad infrastructure company, where he focused on management and regional supply.
Jetten has gained recognition for his engaging public persona, previously dubbed “Robot Jetten” for his rehearsed speaking style. Over time, he has transformed into a social media-savvy leader known for his optimism and the slogan “Het kan wel,” meaning “it is possible.” As a centrist and pro-European politician, Jetten emphasizes climate policy and democratic reform, establishing himself as a pragmatic reformist in Dutch politics.
While estimates of Jetten’s net worth range between £850,000 and £2.5 million, there is no public record detailing his finances. His income primarily stems from his political roles and previous career. Despite his high-profile position, he maintains a relatively simple lifestyle, residing in Utrecht while working in The Hague.
Jetten is engaged to Argentine field hockey player Nicolás Keenan, a two-time Olympian. The couple met in 2022, during Jetten’s relocation due to farmers’ protests. They announced their engagement in November 2024, with Keenan sharing a photo on Instagram captioned, “Soon we will be Mr. & Mr.”
As Jetten embarks on his leadership journey, he faces the challenge of governing a minority coalition. He aims to restore the Netherlands’ pro-European influence and has outlined ambitious plans to address pressing issues such as the housing crisis. His administration intends to accelerate the construction of new neighborhoods and tighten eligibility checks for social housing.
Additionally, Jetten is committed to the “Innovation State” model, planning significant public investment in renewable energy to facilitate a competitive energy transition. His government is also set to introduce a “Freedom Contribution,” financing a substantial £16 billion (€19 billion) expansion of the Dutch armed forces and sustaining military aid to Ukraine. Protecting the education budget and raising the legal age for tobacco use to 21 are also key components of his agenda.
Jetten’s leadership is characterized by optimism and a commitment to consensus-building. He has pledged to govern with an “outstretched hand,” although he must navigate the complexities of uniting differing political factions in the Netherlands.
