RAF Typhoons and French Jets Launch Major Strike on ISIS in Syria
RAF Typhoons have conducted a significant operation in coordination with French aircraft, targeting an underground facility in Syria controlled by the Islamic State (ISIS). The Ministry of Defence confirmed that the mission occurred on Saturday evening, with precision-guided munitions deployed to strike multiple entrance tunnels leading to the complex, located in the mountainous region near the historic city of Palmyra.
This facility was believed to be used for stockpiling weapons and explosives, and the Ministry assured that the surrounding area was devoid of civilian presence during the operation. Defence Secretary John Healey emphasized the UK’s commitment to working alongside its allies to prevent any resurgence of extremist groups like ISIS, stating, “We stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies.” He expressed appreciation for the armed forces involved, acknowledging their role in eliminating threats to national security.
Ongoing Threat of ISIS
The threat posed by ISIS extends beyond Syria, impacting security within the UK and worldwide. Recent reports highlighted a concerning incident in October where the attacker of a Manchester synagogue expressed allegiance to ISIS during a 999 call made amidst the assault. According to Counter Terrorism Policing North West, the assailant, Jihad Al-Shamie, took responsibility for the attack on the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation and was subsequently shot by police after attempting to harm pedestrians.
Al-Shamie’s actions underscored the persistent danger posed by extremist ideologies, even as military operations target their infrastructure. The UK remains vigilant in its approach to countering such threats, reinforcing both military and intelligence capabilities.
Humanitarian Commitment from the UK
Beyond military efforts, the UK has also pledged significant humanitarian aid to Syria. Following the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad, a commitment of an additional £50 million was announced in December 2024. This funding aims to assist vulnerable Syrians, with £30 million designated for those within Syria for essentials such as food, shelter, and healthcare, while £20 million will support Syrian refugees in Lebanon and Jordan.
The UK’s ongoing efforts highlight a dual approach of addressing immediate security threats while also striving for lasting peace and stability in the region. Through both military action and humanitarian support, the UK aims to contribute to the rebuilding of Syria and foster systems of governance that respect the needs of all citizens.
The Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL, remains a designated terrorist organization, seeking to establish a global caliphate based on a strict interpretation of Islamic law. This aspiration has been broadly rejected by the international community, including Muslim leaders worldwide.
This report is part of an evolving situation, and updates will continue to be provided as more information becomes available.
