Prince Harry Positioned for UK Security Reinstatement Ahead of 2026 Visit
Prince Harry is on the verge of regaining access to state-funded armed security protection in the United Kingdom, a significant development after years of legal disputes. Sources have informed People magazine that a recent investigation has concluded that the Duke of Sussex is eligible for full police protection, with officials in the Home Office indicating that reinstatement is likely to be finalized soon.
This anticipated change follows a long history of complications stemming from a decision made in 2020 to revoke Harry’s taxpayer-funded security after he and his wife, Meghan Markle, stepped back from their royal duties. When they ceased to be working royals, their entitlement to state security during visits to the UK was removed, prompting a series of legal challenges.
In May 2025, Harry lost an appeal regarding the withdrawal of his security, describing the ruling as “a good old-fashioned establishment stitch-up.” He argued that this left him and his family vulnerable during their visits to the UK. However, a review conducted by the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (Ravec), which assesses security risks alongside representatives from the Home Office and the Metropolitan Police, reportedly concluded that Harry meets the criteria for reinstated protection.
Insiders indicate that signals from the Home Office are increasingly positive, viewing the reinstatement of armed guards as a procedural formality. Under current regulations, Harry must provide the Metropolitan Police with 30 days’ notice prior to any visit to the UK, allowing for a comprehensive assessment of his security needs. If all goes according to plan, he could receive automatic entitlement to armed police protection before his anticipated visit to the UK in 2026.
The push for renewed formal protection has been influenced by a high-profile incident during one of Harry’s visits in September 2025. Reports indicated that he was approached by an individual during a charity event, raising concerns about his personal safety. These incidents have been cited by Harry as evidence of the potential dangers his family could face without adequate security.
Harry has consistently maintained that the absence of UK security would prevent him from feeling safe bringing his family, particularly his children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, back to his homeland. This possible reinstatement of security could finally resolve a longstanding issue that has hindered family visits, which have been on hold since the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022, when Archie and Lilibet were still very young.
Successful reinstatement of armed security would enable Harry’s children to reconnect with their British heritage and family members, including his father, King Charles III. Harry has expressed a strong desire for his children to explore their British identity and deepen their relationships with their grandparents, noting that a lack of formal security has been a significant barrier to their travel.
While the Home Office has maintained a degree of confidentiality concerning security measures, officials have described the UK’s protective security system as “rigorous and proportionate.” They have stressed the importance of not disclosing specific details, as this could compromise safety arrangements.
The Sussex camp has also refrained from discussing security specifics, given the sensitive nature of the issue and the potential risks involved for Harry and his family. As discussions around security continue, the focus remains on the implications this could have for the Duke and his family’s future visits to the UK.
