Police Declare Explosive Device Found Outside Sinn Féin Office
A viable explosive device was discovered outside a Sinn Féin constituency office in Newry late on Sunday, October 5, 2025. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) responded to reports of a suspicious object shortly before midnight. Following an assessment by the Army Technical Officer (ATO), the object was confirmed as a viable explosive.
The police took immediate action to ensure public safety. A statement from the PSNI indicated that the device was made safe and subsequently removed for further examination. Following this, cordons around the area have been lifted, and Monaghan Street has reopened to the public.
Dáire Hughes, the Sinn Féin Member of Parliament for Newry and Armagh, condemned the discovery as an attack on democracy. He stated, “This is a disgraceful and cowardly act designed to endanger lives and cause major disruption.” Hughes emphasized that Sinn Féin would not be intimidated and would continue to serve the community without fear. He urged anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward and assist the police in their investigation.
Community Response and Ongoing Investigation
PSNI Inspector Walker expressed gratitude to local residents for their patience during the police operation. “An investigation is now underway,” he noted. The police are asking anyone who may have dash-cam or CCTV footage from the area to assist in their inquiries. Those with information are encouraged to contact the police at Ardmore using the non-emergency number 101, referencing report number 1648 05/10/25. Individuals may also submit reports online or reach out anonymously through Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.
As the investigation unfolds, the incident highlights ongoing concerns about safety in the region. Sinn Féin’s focus remains on ensuring the security of local residents, staff, and all who live and work in the area.
The discovery of the explosive device serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced in maintaining peace and security within the community.
