A tragic plane crash at London Southend Airport on July 13, 2023, resulted in the deaths of four individuals shortly after takeoff. The incident occurred just before 16:00 local time, involving a 12-metre aircraft operated by Zeusch Aviation, a company based at Lelystad Airport in the Netherlands.

Eyewitnesses described the harrowing scene, with reports of a large fireball and thick black smoke rising from the crash site. Social media images captured the aftermath, showcasing the devastation. According to Essex Police, the aircraft was involved in an accident as it attempted to depart for Lelystad after a flight from Pula, Croatia, having previously flown from Athens, Greece.

Investigation and Response

In a statement, Zeusch Aviation confirmed that its SUZ1 flight had experienced an accident and expressed condolences for those affected. The company is currently cooperating with authorities in the ongoing investigation. Their aircraft is often utilized for medical purposes, including transporting patients and organs.

Following the crash, Southend Airport announced it would remain closed until further notice, leading to the cancellation of all flights. Travelers scheduled to fly on July 14 were advised to contact their airlines for further information. This included 20 easyJet flights and two Eastern Airways flights planned for that day.

Eyewitness Accounts

John Johnson, who was at the airport with his family, recounted the moments leading up to the crash. He noted that they had waved at the pilots before witnessing the plane take off. “The aircraft took off and about three or four seconds after taking off, it started to bank heavily to its left,” he recalled. “Within a few seconds, it more or less inverted and crashed just head first into the ground.”

Mr. Johnson described the event as shocking, stating, “There was a big fireball. Obviously, everybody was in shock in terms of witnessing it.” He expressed his sympathy for the victims and their families, stating he felt “shaken up” by the experience.

Southend Airport issued a statement expressing its condolences to those affected by the incident and assured the public that operations would resume as soon as possible. The airport committed to providing updates as the situation develops.

As the investigation continues, authorities will seek to determine the cause of the crash in this tragic incident that has profoundly impacted the local community and the aviation industry.
