Pembrokeshire Community Mourns Loss of Youngest Mayor, Jordan Ryan
The Pembrokeshire community is in mourning following the death of Cllr Jordan Ryan, who served as Fishguard’s youngest-ever Mayor. His passing was announced during a meeting of the Pembrokeshire County Council’s corporate overview and scrutiny committee on November 20, 2023. Council chair Cllr Michael John led a moment of silence, expressing condolences to Ryan’s family and friends, stating, “I hope they can all get through this.”
Cllr Ryan represented the Fishguard North East ward since 2022 and was part of a ten-member Labour Party contingent within the County Council. In late September, he resigned from the Labour Party, citing a need for a new socialist movement to effectively challenge the rising influence of far-right ideologies. After his resignation, Cllr Ryan continued to serve as an unaffiliated member, committing to being a “critical friend of the current administration.”
During his resignation announcement, Cllr Ryan highlighted significant concerns about the Labour Party’s direction, stating, “…the forces of the far right are on the march and the current Labour party leadership in Westminster will not, and cannot, stop them.” His decision, he noted, stemmed from a profound disagreement with the party’s stance on social issues, particularly regarding social security for disabled individuals—an issue close to his heart as a member of the disabled community.
Cllr Simon Hancock, presiding member of the council, described Ryan’s death as a “great shock,” acknowledging his dedication to social justice and his role as an ambassador for the Fishguard and Goodwick communities. He added, “Jordan was a dedicated ward member and cared deeply about politics, social justice, and equality.”
The sentiments of grief were echoed by Cllr Jon Harvey, the Council Leader, who expressed deep sorrow at Ryan’s passing. Cllr Harvey remarked on Ryan’s commitment to his constituents, emphasizing his values and principles. “Jordan was a man of values and principles who was extremely proud to represent his constituents of the Fishguard North East ward,” he stated. He noted that Ryan’s passionate contributions to council meetings would be missed by all members, regardless of their political affiliations.
Cllr Ryan’s commitment to social issues was evident in his political philosophy, which reflected Christian teachings. He often spoke about the importance of compassion, stating, “feed the poor, heal the sick, love thy neighbour and share the wealth.” His advocacy for a renewed sense of socialism was underscored by a quote from Percy Bysshe Shelley‘s poem, “The Masque of Anarchy,” which resonated with his call to action against injustice.
The loss of Cllr Ryan marks a significant moment for the Pembrokeshire community, which remembers him as a vibrant and devoted leader. His contributions to local governance and his unwavering commitment to social justice will be remembered by many. As tributes continue to pour in, the community reflects on the impactful legacy he leaves behind.
