Northumberland School Relocates Students Over Safety Concerns
Students from Mowbray Primary School in Northumberland are being relocated to Foundry House in Bedlington due to safety concerns regarding their century-old school building. The decision follows a report from structural engineers, who determined that the school was no longer safe for occupancy.
The relocation process will unfold over the coming weeks as Foundry House undergoes repurposing to accommodate the students. During this transition, pupils will attend various other schools in the area. Local councillor Trevor Austin, representing the Bedlington East ward, acknowledged that while some disruption is expected, prioritizing the children’s safety is essential.
Safety Concerns Prompt Relocation
On December 12, 2023, it was confirmed that Mowbray Primary School would not reopen after the Christmas holidays. This decision was prompted by the findings of a report indicating that cracks in the building had become “widespread and progressive,” alongside evidence of “wall movement.” The structural issues reportedly intensified in recent weeks, leading engineers to declare the building unsafe for students and staff.
The school, which has served the community since the 1920s, has undergone various expansions and renovations over the decades. Notably, a survey conducted earlier in 2023 confirmed that the building did not contain any Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC), a material linked to safety issues in schools nationwide.
Community Response and Future Plans
As the transition begins, Cllr Austin expressed confidence that the community would extend a “warm welcome” to the relocated students and staff. He noted that the move would not only impact the students but also those who frequent the local Family Hub. “While there will be some disruption and inconvenience for us, it will be far greater for the pupils, parents, and staff of Mowbray Primary School,” he remarked.
Initially, construction workers will be on site to prepare Foundry House for its new role as a temporary educational facility. Once complete, a new primary school will begin operations, which is expected to generate additional traffic in the area. Cllr Austin assured the community that this situation would be temporary and that efforts would be made to minimize disruption.
The relocation of students marks a significant moment for the community of Bedlington, highlighting the ongoing commitment to student safety and educational continuity. With the right support and preparation, the hope is that the transition will be as smooth as possible for everyone involved.
