North Korea Unveils New Missiles Amid Ongoing Military Expansion
North Korea recently demonstrated its expanding military capabilities by launching two new air defense missiles, which the government claims possess “superior combat capability.” This development was reported by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), indicating that the missiles are designed for “destroying various air targets,” including attack drones and cruise missiles. However, the KCNA provided limited details about the missile specifications and the location of the tests.
The focus on air defense systems comes as North Korea continues to develop an extensive arsenal of missiles, including intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) and short-range systems. According to a report from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), North Korea has established multiple undeclared missile operating bases not included in any demilitarization discussions.
Overview of North Korea’s Missile Arsenal
One significant site identified is the Sinpung-dong missile base, located approximately 27 kilometers from the Chinese border. CSIS estimates that this base houses between six and nine Hwasong-15 or Hwasong-18 ICBMs, along with their respective launchers. The Hwasong-15, also known as KN-22, measures up to 22.5 meters in length and can reach targets up to 13,000 kilometers away. Since its first test flight in 2017, during which it traveled 4,475 kilometers, North Korea has been developing this missile. The North Korean leadership has previously claimed that it is capable of delivering a “super-large heavy warhead” that could strike the continental United States.
The Hwasong-18 is believed to be a solid-fuel missile, providing several operational advantages, including a quicker launch time and easier handling and storage capabilities. Additionally, North Korea possesses the Hwasong-19, which was first tested in November 2022 as a reaction to what North Korean leader Kim Jong Un termed “provocations” from South Korea and the United States.
Short-Range and Nuclear Missile Capabilities
In its report, CSIS highlighted the Kal-Gol base, situated roughly 52 kilometers north of the demilitarized zone with South Korea. This base is reported to contain Hwasong-6 missiles, which have a range of 500 kilometers. Operational since 1991, the Hwasong-6 measures approximately 10.9 meters in length and can carry a single payload of up to 770 kilograms. This missile has found use in several countries, including Iran, Iraq, and Syria.
Furthermore, CSIS suggests that additional bases may be equipped with the Hwasong-9, which is an extended range version of the Hwasong-6. This missile, measuring 13.5 meters long, has a range of 1,000 kilometers and a launch weight of 6,400 kilograms. It can be armed with various types of warheads, including conventional high-explosive, nuclear, chemical, or biological.
According to the Federation of American Scientists (FAS), North Korea’s missile capabilities are complemented by its nuclear arsenal, despite international sanctions imposed by the United Nations. As of 2024, FAS estimates that North Korea has enough fissile material to produce up to 90 nuclear warheads, although the actual number assembled is likely closer to 50.
The developments surrounding North Korea’s missile arsenal continue to raise concerns internationally, particularly regarding the potential implications for regional security and stability. As the country advances its military technology, the global community remains watchful of its actions and the responses from neighboring nations.
