NNPP Demands Formal Resignation from Governor Yusuf Before Departure
The Kano State chapter of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has informed Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf that he is permitted to leave the party, but only after submitting a formal resignation as stipulated by party protocols. During a press conference in Kano on March 12, 2024, the State Chairman of the NNPP, Senator Elmasud Doguwa, emphasized that the party would not obstruct the governor if he no longer wishes to remain a member.
Doguwa asserted that adherence to proper procedures is crucial. He stated that Governor Yusuf must provide written notification to the recognized NNPP before switching allegiance to any other political entity. This statement comes in response to mounting speculation regarding the governor’s potential defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is still a bona fide member of the NNPP, the party with a basket of fruits as its logo,” Doguwa said. “We respect him as our governor and as a member of our party. However, if he chooses to leave, he has the legal right to do so. What we are insisting on is that he must formally tender his resignation to the party, which we are yet to receive.”
Doguwa highlighted that while political party membership is ultimately an individual decision, it must comply with established rules and regulations. He warned that neglecting the formal resignation process could lead to legal repercussions, especially in light of ongoing litigation concerning the party’s leadership.
“Given the judgments already delivered by three courts, if Governor Yusuf decides to defect without resigning through the bona fide NNPP, it may not go without consequences if the final judgment of the Supreme Court is eventually in our favour,” he cautioned.
The NNPP leadership maintains that it is the legitimate authority in Kano based on existing court decisions. Doguwa called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to respect and enforce these rulings, asserting that the commission must uphold the legal frameworks established by the judiciary.
“We are calling on INEC to respect all the judgments delivered by the courts last year on this matter,” Doguwa added.
As the political landscape in Kano continues to evolve, the NNPP’s stance reflects its commitment to due process within its ranks. The party’s future, along with that of Governor Yusuf, remains uncertain as discussions about potential political shifts gain traction.
