Mayor Howard Smith Celebrates Community Events in August

The Mayor of Guildford, Howard Smith, and Deputy Mayor, Jane Tyson, engaged in a series of community events throughout August 2025, highlighting local culture and commemorating significant anniversaries. The activities ranged from celebrating a centenarian’s birthday to participating in traditional sports events, fostering community spirit and remembrance.
Community Engagement and Celebrations
On August 3, the Mayor visited Mrs. Rosina Key at the Pilgrim Wood Residential Home in Guildford to celebrate her remarkable milestone of turning 100 years old. This visit underscored the importance of honoring residents’ contributions to the community, particularly those who have reached significant life milestones.
Two weeks later, on August 17, Deputy Mayor Jane Tyson, along with her Consort, Mr. Paul Tyson, participated in the VJ Day Drumhead Service held by the West Clandon Royal British Legion. The service, which began at 10:15, was a solemn occasion to remember the sacrifices made during World War II. Later that day, at 17:45, they attended a commemorative event at Guildford Cathedral, further emphasizing the community’s commitment to remembrance.
Sporting Events and Local Initiatives
On August 21, Mayor Howard Smith, accompanied by the Mayoress and family, visited the Guildford Archery Club in Normandy. The visit was part of the preparation for the Mayor to shoot the first arrow at the Acorn Tournament scheduled for August 25, a highlight for the local sporting calendar. This event not only showcases local talent but also encourages community participation in sports.
On the day of the tournament, the Mayor officially opened the event by shooting the first arrow at 09:00, marking the beginning of a series of competitions. Later that afternoon, at 14:00, the Mayor and his family attended a charity music event hosted by the Guildford Wey Rotary at Gosden House School in Bramley. This event aimed to raise funds for local charities, reinforcing the Mayor’s commitment to community welfare.
The month concluded with a significant sporting event on August 30, where the Mayor and Mayoress officially opened the Guildford Flames opening match at the Guildford Spectrum. The match served as an exciting finale to a month filled with community engagement and celebration.
These events reflect the ongoing dedication of Guildford’s leadership to foster community spirit, encourage local involvement, and commemorate historical milestones. The Mayor and Deputy Mayor’s participation in these activities highlights their commitment to serving the residents of Guildford while promoting local culture and history.
