Man Facing Deportation After Claiming to Swim from France
A man who claimed to be British after allegedly swimming from France to the Channel Islands is set to be deported. The individual, identified as “David Henry Law,” was rescued from Rozel Bay in Jersey in March 2024 after reportedly spending 13 hours in the water. He had only €265 in cash and no formal identification, and he attempted to use quotes from Shakespeare to assert his citizenship.
Rescue teams found him after three passersby heard his cries for help. When authorities questioned his identity, Law, who was wearing a wetsuit, swim cap, and goggles, insisted he was a 35-year-old British citizen. However, investigators could not locate any official records confirming his identity, leading to his incarceration for entering the island without permission.
Identity and Legal Complications
As his prison sentence neared its conclusion, officials faced a complex legal situation regarding Law’s status. The Jersey Customs and Immigration Service (JCIS) confirmed that they had established the man’s true identity. They stated that he had used a false name and that he is not a British citizen, thus lacking the right to reside in Jersey.
In a statement, JCIS noted, “Enquiries made by JCIS have established that the person who claimed to be David Henry Law, and to be a British citizen, is not David Henry Law and is not a British citizen.” The agency is currently coordinating with international authorities to arrange for his return to another jurisdiction. Until those arrangements are finalized, he remains in La Moye Prison under immigration detention.
Next Steps and Privacy Concerns
JCIS has declined to disclose the individual’s real name for privacy reasons, emphasizing their commitment to confidentiality in this case. The situation raises questions about the legal implications of identity fraud and the processes involved in deportation.
As investigations continue, the case highlights the challenges faced by immigration officials in verifying identities, particularly in unusual circumstances such as this. The actions of Law, whether driven by desperation or another motive, have now led to significant legal consequences.
With the JCIS actively working on the next steps for the individual’s deportation, the case will likely continue to attract attention as further details emerge.
