Man Arrested for Drone Incident During Trump’s State Visit

A man has been arrested for allegedly flying a drone near Windsor Castle as former U.S. President Donald Trump commenced his state visit to the United Kingdom. The incident occurred shortly after Trump’s arrival on September 16, 2023, when he landed at Stansted Airport in Essex aboard Air Force One.
The 37-year-old man, from Brentford, London, was taken into custody by Thames Valley Police after officers observed the unmanned aerial vehicle hovering over Windsor Great Park, an area that is often referred to as Windsor Castle’s backyard. The park comprises both private and public sections, and the drone’s presence violated airspace restrictions established to ensure security during the high-profile visit.
The police spokesperson confirmed, “A 37-year-old man from Brentford, London was arrested at Windsor Great Park for flying a drone that breached an airspace restriction order.” The individual remains in police custody while an investigation is underway under aviation legislation.
Security Measures Heightened for State Visit
This state visit, which is being conducted under a strict “ring of steel,” has implemented enhanced security protocols in light of potential threats. These measures follow the recent tragic shooting of Charlie Kirk, a key ally of Trump, in Utah, underscoring the heightened security concerns surrounding the visit.
According to Thames Valley Police, a temporary airspace restriction is in effect over Windsor from September 16 to 18, encompassing all aircraft, including drones. A similar restriction has been established at Chequers, the official country residence of the Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, where Trump is also scheduled to meet with him.
Inspector Matthew Wilkinson of the Joint Operations Unit emphasized the importance of these measures, stating, “We have a significant security operation in place in and around Windsor for the visit of President Trump, and this now includes additional airspace restrictions over Chequers.”
Police will utilize drones and support from the National Police Air Service to monitor the restricted airspace. They are prepared to address any violations robustly, ensuring the safety of the public and all involved in the visit.
Public Safety and Reporting Protocols
In light of the ongoing security operations, authorities encourage the public to remain vigilant. Those who notice any suspicious activities, whether in the air or on the ground, are urged to report their observations to the police. Citizens can engage with officers directly, report online, or call 101 for non-emergencies. In urgent situations, the public is advised to call 999.
The incident serves as a reminder of the strict regulations in place during significant state visits, aimed at protecting both dignitaries and the general public. As Trump engages with members of the Royal Family and meets with Starmer, the police maintain a comprehensive security strategy to ensure a safe environment for all involved.
