A series of significant court rulings unfolded in the North East this week, with several individuals receiving lengthy prison sentences for serious crimes. The cases included arson, attempted murder, and violent robbery, highlighting a range of criminal activity in the region.

Five Men Sentenced for Arson

Five men were sentenced to a combined total of 25 years in prison for their involvement in a dramatic arson case that targeted the property of local businessman John Henry Sayers. The defendants—Grant Royal, John Reid, Mitchell Smith, Grant Curley, and Walter Patterson—pleaded guilty to the charges following an incident in which they reversed a vehicle into Sayers’ property and set it ablaze. The Newcastle Crown Court ruled on the case, which occurred between January and February 2023.

Attempted Murder and Stabbing Convictions

In a separate case, Adam Ahmed was found guilty of attempting to murder Leon Askew during a brutal attack. The incident involved Ahmed covering Askew’s eyes, tilting his head back, and stabbing him. Following this attack, Ahmed also stabbed another man, Robert Graham, in the stomach. The court’s decision underscores the severity of Ahmed’s actions, which have left lasting consequences for the victims.

Robbery Leads to Three-Year Sentence

Meanwhile, a man identified as Christopher Cook was sentenced to three years in prison after attempting to stab the manager of the Veterans At Ease shop located on Shields Road, Byker, Newcastle. Cook, who referred to himself as a “full-time burglar,” broke into the shop through the roof, causing significant damage estimated in the thousands before stealing cash and items from a tombola bucket.

Dangerous Driving Resulting in Fatality

In a tragic case, Sahil Nagpal from Wardley, Gateshead, received a ten-year prison sentence for causing death by dangerous driving. His actions resulted in the death of a beloved father who never met his grandson. The Teesside Crown Court delivered the sentence after Nagpal was found guilty of multiple charges related to the head-on collision during a four-day trial earlier this year.

Violence Against the Elderly

Lastly, Michael Ainsley, a 41-year-old from Chester-le-Street, was sentenced to six years in prison for a vicious attack on an elderly man. Ainsley assaulted the victim with a hammer while demanding drugs, an incident that has drawn public concern regarding violence against vulnerable individuals.

These cases serve as a reminder of the ongoing challenges related to crime in the North East. The judicial outcomes reflect a commitment to addressing serious offenses and ensuring community safety.
