Douglas Councillor Mark Wheeler Resigns Amid Controversy
A Douglas Councillor has resigned from his position effective immediately. Mark Richard Wheeler, who was elected unopposed to represent Central Ward on May 1, 2025, has decided to step away from his role. The announcement was made by a spokesperson for Douglas City Council, who expressed gratitude for Wheeler’s service and wished him well for the future. The council also indicated that arrangements for a by-election in Central Ward would be announced soon.
Wheeler’s resignation follows a series of controversies that have surrounded him since his election. He gained significant media attention in 2023 when he protested against overflowing bins at the Rosemount pub by pushing one inside Douglas City Hall. His election manifesto urged voters to “take out the trash,” criticizing council officials for what he described as “arrogance, ignorance, and pig-headedness.”
In addition to his controversial protests, Wheeler faced allegations during his previous employment as a probation officer with the island’s Probation Service. He was accused of sending explicit sexual messages to a vulnerable client. In 2011, the General Social Care Council found him guilty of misconduct, resulting in his removal from the social care register. Despite this past, Wheeler asserted to the Isle of Man Examiner that the misconduct ruling had no relevance to his current role, stating, “I have no further comment to make as it bears zero relation to my role and all relevant information is in the public domain.”
In response to the allegations, a spokesperson for Douglas City Council noted that the council had investigated and sought advice on the matter. The spokesperson clarified that while these issues are part of the public record, they do not disqualify an individual from standing for public office.
Wheeler’s departure raises questions about the stability of representation in Central Ward and the potential implications for future council dynamics. As the council prepares for the upcoming by-election, residents will undoubtedly be watching closely for candidates who can effectively address local concerns.
