Councillors Debate Pothole Crisis Amid Rising Road Complaints
Motorists in northern Lincolnshire are facing a growing crisis as over 1,700 reports of potholes were submitted to North East Lincolnshire Council between December and February, prompting discussions about the council’s highways maintenance policy. A full debate is scheduled later this month to address the escalating issue, which has sparked significant concern among local residents.
According to a senior councillor, all reported potholes have been inspected, highlighting the widespread nature of the problem. The council’s spokesperson noted that this year has seen “a significantly higher number of potholes” compared to previous years, attributing the surge to prolonged wet weather and fluctuating temperatures.
Residents have taken to social media to express their frustrations. In the Grimsby Traffic and Travel Facebook group, one user remarked about a particularly hazardous pothole on Oxford Street, declaring that “a motorcyclist could easily be killed with this crater.” Another comment described the dangers of navigating roads littered with potholes, likening the situation to driving under the influence as vehicles swerve to avoid damage.
Concerns about road maintenance were raised during North Lincolnshire Council’s budget meeting last month, where some roads were compared to scenes from a World War One battlefield. Cllr Nicola Aisthorpe, representing East Marsh Ward, criticized the quality of previous resurfacing efforts, stating that roads resurfaced last year, including Oxford Street, have already begun to show signs of deterioration. She emphasized the need for a comprehensive review of the highways maintenance strategy to prevent further issues.
Cllr Aisthorpe remarked, “We’re seeing dangerous potholes left for months, reports of injuries and damage to vehicles and bikes.” The Liberal Democrat councillors have been vocal about the need for a proactive approach rather than a reactive one. The call for a strategy review has gained momentum, especially in light of the council’s amber rating on the first-ever pothole map released by the government earlier this year.
The opposition Labour group echoed these concerns, stating that the current state of roads in Grimsby, Cleethorpes, and surrounding areas is “simply not good enough.” Cllr Stewart Swinburn, the Conservative transport portfolio holder, acknowledged the frustrations surrounding potholes and confirmed that the Conservative group would present a motion to address road maintenance in the upcoming council meeting.
Cllr Swinburn noted the impact of “consistent cold and extremely wet weather” on road conditions. He stated, “It is a national problem. But we’re trying to do as much as we can to keep on top of it.” He confirmed that the council had conducted inspections on all reported potholes and carried out nearly 500 first-time carriageway reinstatements since December, resulting in the resurfacing of 700 square meters of roads.
In terms of funding, the council recently announced a £7.4 million boost from the government for highways investment, which includes £3 million designated for borough-wide carriageway resurfacing. Cllr Swinburn expressed hope for cross-party support for the motion concerning the council’s highways maintenance strategy, aiming for improvements in road repairs and overall maintenance practices.
As discussions continue, residents remain vigilant, eager for solutions to the pothole crisis affecting their daily commutes and safety on the roads.
