Co Down Man Shares HIV Journey on World AIDS Day

A man from County Down, known only as Eddie, has publicly shared his journey with HIV for the first time on World AIDS Day. His experience highlights the often-hidden struggles associated with the virus, particularly the stigma that persists in Northern Ireland. Eddie, a 61-year-old business consultant and father of two, was diagnosed with HIV 11 years ago after a new partner concealed their status from him.

Eddie’s journey began amidst a tumultuous period in his life, marked by the breakdown of his marriage. Following this, he entered a relationship that he believed was built on trust. He later revealed that when he informed his partner of his diagnosis, he discovered they had known about their own HIV status but chose not to disclose it. “My world fell apart. I was in what I felt to be a trusted relationship,” he reflected.

At the age of 50, Eddie noticed a decline in his health, prompting his general practitioner to recommend an HIV test. “The GP said I was HIV positive. There was no discussion about what HIV was, just that I needed to go to the GUM clinic,” he recalled. The stigma surrounding HIV in Northern Ireland has made it difficult for Eddie to share his diagnosis. He has disclosed it to almost no one—keeping it from his ex-wife and children, and only telling three close friends.

Eddie emphasizes that “HIV can happen to anyone.” He noted the common misconception that the virus predominantly affects gay men. “I was married with children. We need to get the message out that anyone of any age or gender who is sexually active can get HIV,” he stated.

On December 1, 2023, Eddie encouraged individuals to get tested and seek treatment. “The most important message right now is to get tested, to get treatment and to access the non-judgmental support I’ve had from Positive Life as soon as possible,” he said. His connection with Positive Life, Northern Ireland’s only dedicated HIV charity, has been transformative. “Had it not been for Positive Life, I wouldn’t be here to tell my story,” he added, crediting the support and therapeutic counseling he received for helping him come to terms with his diagnosis.

According to the Department of Health, there were 101 new diagnoses of HIV in Northern Ireland last year, with 1,439 people currently living with the virus. Alarmingly, a recent health survey indicated that nearly one-fifth of individuals aged 16 to 34 have not heard of HIV, and fewer than one in three understand that someone on effective medication cannot transmit the virus.

Jacquie Richardson, Chief Executive of Positive Life, echoed Eddie’s sentiments, stating, “Our message is get tested, know your status and end HIV.” The organization remains dedicated to combating the stigma surrounding HIV and providing support to those affected.

Eddie’s story sheds light on the urgent need for awareness and education regarding HIV. As he continues to navigate life with the virus, he hopes that sharing his experience will inspire others to seek help and challenge the stigma that still exists.
