California Governor’s Wife Challenges Journalists at Press Conference
During a press conference on February 11, 2026, California Governor Gavin Newsom faced unexpected criticism from his wife, Jenifer Siebel, who challenged reporters over the questions posed during the event. The conference was convened to discuss a newly signed bill, which allocates $90 million in funding to Planned Parenthood clinics, aimed at offsetting federal funding losses incurred under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.
As Governor Newsom addressed various topics, many of the questions from the press did not focus on women’s health issues, which prompted Siebel to step in. After Newsom had responded to the initial inquiries, a group of supporters, dressed in pink, began chanting, “Planned Parenthood, protect women!” It was at this point that Siebel approached the microphone to express her concerns.
Critique of Media Focus
Siebel expressed her disbelief that, despite the presence of a significant women’s caucus, journalists were not directing their questions toward the impact of the funding boost on women’s health services. She remarked, “We just find it incredulous that we have Planned Parenthood here and women are 51 percent of the population.” Her comments highlighted her frustration with the media’s focus, stating, “The majority of these questions—really, all of these questions—have been about other issues.”
She continued, emphasizing the ongoing challenges faced by women in the United States. “You wonder why we have such a horrific war on women in this country, and that these guys are getting away with it. You don’t seem to care. So I just offer that with love,” Siebel concluded, underscoring the critical nature of the funding and the services provided by Planned Parenthood.
Background on the Funding Bill
The legislation signed by Governor Newsom aims to ensure that Planned Parenthood can continue to provide essential health services, which have faced significant challenges due to the loss of federal funding. The allocated $90 million is intended to support clinics across California, ensuring access to reproductive health services for women in need.
As the press conference concluded, the exchange between Siebel and the journalists underscored the importance of media accountability, particularly regarding issues affecting women’s rights and health care. This event serves as a reminder of the ongoing discourse surrounding women’s health funding and the critical role that organizations like Planned Parenthood play in providing necessary services.
