Zoran Slavnić, a celebrated figure in the world of basketball, recently shared his insights on the current state of the sport during a World Friendship event in Ulcinj. At 76 years old, Slavnić remains an engaging commentator, reflecting on the evolution of basketball in the region since the glory days of the Yugoslav national team, which won gold in the 2002 Indianapolis World Championships. Since then, the only gold medal from the region at a major tournament came from Slovenia in 2017.

Slavnić, a three-time European champion and an Olympic gold medalist, emphasized the significant differences between his generation and the post-Yugoslav teams. “Every generation has its own characteristics,” he noted. “I played in happy times, but not wealthy times. Today, players compete in rich but unhappy circumstances.” This perspective shapes his understanding of modern basketball, where he expresses both empathy and discontent regarding the current state of the sport.

Comparing Generations and Modern Challenges

In a candid conversation, Slavnić highlighted the challenges faced by contemporary playmakers. He stated, “A player is born with creativity.” He pointed out that while there have been standout talents, like Serbian player Miloš Teodosić, the current style of play has shifted. “The game is played differently now,” he remarked, acknowledging the evolution while expressing his reservations about the direction it has taken.

When asked about the recent EuroBasket results, Slavnić expressed disappointment in the performances of several post-Yugoslav national teams. “Hrvatska did not even qualify among the top 24 teams, and our Montenegro fell short of expectations to advance,” he said. He emphasized that the failure of these teams to perform at a high level is indicative of broader societal issues, stating, “The results reflect the state of the societies and how basketball is developed within those countries.”

Slavnić pointed out that theoretically, multiple Yugoslav teams could have excelled in the EuroBasket, but instead, they struggled. “Serbia lost to Finland, a team we didn’t even consider a serious competitor,” he explained. Despite this setback, he remains optimistic about Serbia’s potential for recovery, asserting, “We will bounce back, and I am confident about that.”

Looking Ahead to the EuroLeague

As the EuroLeague season approaches, starting on October 17, 2023, Slavnić shared his expectations. He expressed skepticism regarding the chances of Belgrade’s teams making it to the playoffs, citing repeated mistakes in player selection. “Given what I have seen during the preparations and team selections, I don’t think they can make it,” he stated.

Despite his critical insights, Slavnić has chosen to adopt a fan’s perspective going forward. “I have decided to be just a supporter, without any desire for professional analysis. This makes me happy,” he concluded with a smile, emphasizing his enduring passion for the sport.

The conversation with Slavnić not only sheds light on the current challenges faced by basketball in the region but also serves as a reminder of the rich history and legacy of Yugoslav basketball, which continues to influence the sport today.
