Wrexham’s Material Evolution Wins National Innovation Award for Cement
A Wrexham-based company, Material Evolution, has achieved significant recognition by winning the National Innovation Award at the 2025 Constructing Excellence Awards. This accolade follows their earlier victory as the Welsh regional winner earlier in the year. The judges acknowledged the firm’s innovative approach to ultra-low carbon construction, describing it as “bold and game-changing.”
Material Evolution, often referred to as Mevo, utilizes advanced technologies including artificial intelligence, machine learning, and alkali fusion to create a sustainable binder known as MevoCem. This process effectively combines industrial by-products without requiring heat, resulting in a remarkable reduction of carbon emissions by approximately 85% compared to traditional Portland cement.
Milestone in Sustainable Construction
In October 2024, Mevo inaugurated its Mevo A1 Production Facility in Wales, marking it as the UK’s largest ultra-low carbon cement plant capable of producing MevoCem at commercial scale. This development is seen as a pivotal moment for the cement industry, further solidifying Mevo’s position as a leader in sustainable construction materials.
Dr. Liz Gilligan, CEO and co-founder of Material Evolution, expressed her enthusiasm regarding the award. “Winning the Constructing Excellence National Innovation Award is a huge milestone for Material Evolution and a real validation of everything our team has worked towards,” she stated. Dr. Gilligan emphasized that this recognition is not only a testament to their technology but also highlights the significant changes being made in the construction sector.
“What excites me most is that this award shows the industry is ready to embrace ultra-low carbon solutions,” she added. “It proves that sustainable, scalable, high-performance cement is not just possible; it’s happening today.” Dr. Gilligan further noted that this achievement serves as a reminder of the responsibility to continue advancing sustainable innovation.
Recognition and Future Commitment
Material Evolution’s success extends beyond the National Innovation Award. The company also received accolades at this year’s UK Green Business Awards and the Unlock Net Zero Awards. Furthermore, it was featured in the Construction Industry Training Board’s Top 100 Most Influential Women in Construction Awards. Recently, Mevo has also secured its Made in Britain certification, reinforcing its commitment to domestic manufacturing.
As the construction industry increasingly prioritizes sustainability, Mevo stands at the forefront, demonstrating that innovative solutions can lead to meaningful reductions in carbon emissions. For more information about Material Evolution and its groundbreaking solutions, visit their website.
