Wrexham Student Turns Grief into Fashion Ambition

A young man from Broughton, Wales, is transforming his passion for fashion into a career, inspired by the memory of his late mother. Richard Jones, 35, has embarked on a journey in fashion design after inheriting a sewing machine from his mother, Jacqueline, who passed away in 2024. This significant loss, coupled with the challenges of the pandemic, shaped Richard’s resolve to pursue his dreams and explore his creativity.

Richard began his educational journey by enrolling in an Adult Learning Wales course in Wrexham. He has progressed through the program and is now preparing to take a foundation degree in art and design at Chester University, with plans to follow up with a three-year degree in fashion design. His aspirations include showcasing his creations in major fashion capitals such as London, New York, Paris, and Milan.

During the pandemic, Richard faced significant challenges that impacted his mental health, particularly following the loss of his mother, for whom he had been a carer for six years. His experience reflects the broader struggles many faced during this period. He is now sharing his story to inspire others as part of Adult Learners’ Week in Wales, which runs from September 15 to 21, 2024. This initiative, coordinated by the Learning and Work Institute in partnership with the Welsh Government, aims to promote lifelong learning opportunities across the region.

“What began as a way to honour mum’s memory soon evolved into an eagerness to learn this skill as a profession,” Richard explained. “Through each stitch and project, I not only developed a new skill, but also discovered a deep appreciation for the artistry and expression involved in fashion.”

Sewing has served as a therapeutic outlet for Richard, providing a means to channel his creativity and navigate his grief. He commended his sewing tutor, Tina Doyle, and Vikki Roberts, Adult Learning Wales’ curriculum development co-ordinator, for their unwavering support. “They have become a positive support group in my life and helped me explore my creative voice,” he added.

Vikki Roberts described Richard as the “ideal community adult learner,” emphasizing his passion and enthusiasm in the classroom. “After the loss of his mum, he was left feeling he had nowhere to turn. He has shown great strength to turn his life around.”

Richard’s diverse work history includes roles in hairdressing, call centres, and banking. He advocates for Adult Learners’ Week in Wales, encouraging others to pursue their interests. “It’s never too late to change career if you think you have made a mistake,” he said. “Too many people get stuck in a career they don’t enjoy. You are never too old to learn something new.”

Richard reflects on his mother’s wisdom, stating, “Life is far too short to not go for what you want and not be apologetic about it.” Through his journey, he aims to inspire others to embrace their passions and pursue their dreams, no matter the obstacles they face.
